Journalists should:
Have a genuine conscience (you are not a journalist without one)
Have genuine empathy (you are not a journalist without one)
Tell the truth (meaning don't lie)
Lastly: Never - ever - Ever - be told the rules/customs/best practices/good habits of journalism by any other human being. If you need to be taught the 'fundamentals' of journalism then you are not a journalist and are liable to have a personality that is easily manipulated and easier 'edited' away from your conscience and empathy.
