The shooting happened near St. Louis police headquarters, where group of protesters and police have clashed repeatedly throughout the night.

Limited information is available at this time, but St. Louis police confirmed multiple officers were shot and were taken for treatment at a local hospital. All are expected to survive.

Police did say, via tweet, that other officers downtown are continuing to take gunfire.

"Please keep these officers in your thoughts and prayers, as well as all our brave first responders responding to the unfolding situation downtown tonight," St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson wrote on Facebook.

Protests turned violent downtown as the sun went down, following a day of peaceful protests. Protesters looted many downtown businesses and set fire to the 7-Eleven store in Downtown West.

"St. Louis County Police are trying to solve a weekend burglary at a South County pawnshop in which more than 30 guns were stolen.

They came in six separate vehicles, 10 men breaking into the Southside Pawn and Jewelry in Affton early Sunday morning. St. Louis County Police Spokesman Sgt. Ben Granda says police were alerted by alarms inside the shop around 1 a.m.

Among the 34 guns stolen were 32 semi-automatic handguns and two semi-automatic rifles. No arrests have been made. The federal bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms is helping with the investigation.

Granda says they don't have videos and photos of the suspects that they are ready to share at this time.

"You have to think that the suspects who did that, their intentions are more than likely nefarious, just based on the actions of how they acquired them," Granda says. "I can't image they are going to go skeet shooting or something like that."

He says it's presumptive to say at this time that the incident was related to the nationwide protests over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. "
