Former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein will testify next week as part of the Senate Judiciary Committee's probe into the origins of the FBI's Russia investigation, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) announced on Wednesday.

The hearing, scheduled for June 3, marks the first public hearing Graham will hold as part of his deep dive into "Crossfire Hurricane," the name for the investigation into Russia's 2016 election interference and the Trump campaign.

Graham said that Rosenstein will speak about "new revelations" included in Justice Department inspector general Michael Horowitz's report on surveillance warrant applications tied to former Trump campaign aide Carter Page. Rosenstein, who was interviewed as part of Horowitz's investigation, signed off on the third Page warrant renewal application.

“This will be the first in a series of oversight hearings regarding all things Crossfire Hurricane and the Mueller investigation," Graham said.

Apple is tracking iPhones stolen by looters

Apple has an eerie message for the looters who have pillaged its stores during recent protests: We’re watching you.

Thieves who made off with iPhones from ransacked Apple retail locations in recent days quickly learned that the gadgets were loaded with special security software, as they displayed a message on their screens indicating that their locations were being monitored.

“Please return to Apple Walnut Street,” read the onscreen message of an iPhone stolen from an Apple store in Philadelphia, according to social media posts. “This device has been disabled and is being tracked. Local authorities will be alerted.”

TikTok blames tech glitch after users accuse it of censoring black voices during George Floyd protests

Video-sharing platform TikTok has come under fire from users accusing it of censoring hashtags related to the ongoing US protests sparked by George Floyd's death. The company insists the issue was caused by a technical glitch.

Hashtags such as #GeorgeFloyd and #BlackLivesMatter were marked with zero views despite their subject matter dominating the news cycle and various social media for days, leading to one TikTok user tweeting that the company should “just admit your [sic] anti-black.”

TikTok blocked the #blacklivesmatter tag and every single tag related to #GeorgeFloyd. This is disgusting.Fuck TikTok. pic.twitter.com/HVDCFNuVyc

Users of the platform, which is owned by China’s ByteDance, changed their profile pictures to black fists in solidarity with the protesters, while some on the social network have been encouraging others to blacklist those who did not support the movement.

China closes 48 Christian churches in 2 weeks: report

The end of coronavirus lockdowns in China have meant the return of aggressive government persecution for many Christian churches in the communist country. For some, that has involved being ordered to remove crosses, while others have seen the shuttering and even demolition of their places of worship.

Yugan county has nearly 100,000 Protestant believers spread across 300 state-sanctioned churches. That proportionally high density of Christians has made Yugan an easy target for communist harassment. Reports indicate that within just a two-week period in April, at least 48 churches were shut down in the county.

A village Chinese Communist Party secretary in the Daxi township of Yugan explained the government's position.

"Higher echelons of government declared after an inspection that there were too many believers in the county," he said. "When so many believe in God, who will listen to the Communist Party? There is no other choice but to remove crosses from your churches."

House leadership is trying to ram through a reauthorization of FISA and PATRIOT Act surveillance authorities using an obscure Congressional mechanism

Late last night, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D–CA) scrapped a vote to reauthorize PATRIOT Act surveillance powers. The decision came after the California democrat killed pro-privacy amendments supported by a bipartisan group of lawmakers in the House and Senate, causing a massive backlash among human rights advocates, journalists, and Internet users everywhere. President Trump even chimed in, threatening to veto any reauthorization of the PATRIOT Act that failed to include privacy protections.

But today, Washington, DC insiders are reporting that Nancy Pelosi is using a Congressional procedure called a conference committee to force the House to reauthorize the PATRIOT Act without consideration of any amendments. Not only would this prevent the House of Representatives from voting on the popular Wyden-Daines amendment which would force the government to obtain a warrant before spying on people’s Internet activity, but it would also prevent the House from ratifying the Lee-Leahy amendment which has been passed by the Senate to protect journalists, political candidates, and religious groups from government surveillance.

Will courts finally make the TSA comply with FOIA?

The tenor of questioning by the judge in a Federal court hearing last week raises hope that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) might soon be ordered to correct some of its longest standing and most systemic violations of the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA).

It’s no exaggeration to say that, from its creation in November 2001, the TSA has acted with complete contempt for the FOIA law and the requirements that law imposes on the TSA and all other Federal agencies. Time after time, TSA failure to comply with FOIA has delayed, complicated, or completely frustrated our research and reporting on TSA policies and procedures, and has deprived the public of the opportunity for informed scrutiny and comment on what the TSA is doing, why, and with what effects on our rights.

One chronic problem is the way the TSA responds to FOIA requests for digital records.

Provisions of the FOIA statute that went into effect as part of the Electronic FOIA Amendments Act of 1996 — years before the TSA came into existence — require that:

5 USC § 552(a)(3)(B) — In making any record available to a person under this paragraph, an agency shall provide the record in any form or format requested by the person if the record is readily reproducible by the agency in that form or format. Each agency shall make reasonable efforts to maintain its records in forms or formats that are reproducible for purposes of this section.

GCHQ Secretly Infiltrating UK Schools, Targeting 'Vulnerable' Children, Report Shows

GCHQ officers are directly operating in at least one school, while parents of pupils at schools across the programme do not appear to have been informed about the spy agency’s role in it.

Declassified UK has exclusively revealed Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), the UK’s largest intelligence agency, has gained intimate access to at least 22,000 primary and secondary school children in dozens of UK schools, and the organisation may even be spying on children.

Furthermore, GCHQ’s Cyber Schools Hub (CSH) programme, also known as CyberFirst, is said to be disseminating pro-agency propaganda to school children - the programme has also illicitly expanded into 10 primary schools since launch in 2018, with students aged 4 - 11. While programme literature suggests the project covers 23 schools, Declassified has found nearly double this figure are actually involved.

WikiLeaks founder skips court hearing

(NEWSER) – Julian Assange refused to attend a court hearing Monday in England, even as a group of Australian lawmakers, journalists and human rights advocates pushed for him to be released on bail. A judge in London said an email from the prison where the WikiLeaks founder is being held said that Assange was "refusing to attend the hearing and refusing to sign a refusal form," 7 News Australia reports. Asked if he was ill, Assange's lawyers said he's "had respiratory problems for some time." His extradition hearing is scheduled for September. Assange faces 17 charges in the US under the Espionage Act, as well as conspiracy to commit computer intrusion, per the Guardian. The due date for psychiatric reports on Assange from both sides was postponed till July 31.

Hong Kong Bans Annual Tiananmen Square Vigil

Organizers say they planned to maintain social distancing at June 4 event

(NEWSER) – Police in Hong Kong have banned the annual candelit vigil in memory of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre—and organizers fear it will never be allowed again. In 1990, an estimated 180,000 people attended the vigil in Victoria Park to mark the first anniversary of the massacre of pro-democracy protesters in Beijing. The vigil became an annual event, even after the 1997 handover, when Hong Kong became the only place in China where the crackdown was commemorated. Police said the mass event is not being allowed due to coronavirus concerns, although organizers said attendees could come to the park in groups of eight, as allowed under current regulations, and maintain social distancing, the BBC reports.

China is finalizing details of a strict new "national security law" for Hong Kong, and activists fear the ban on "subversion" will be broad enough to include the vigil next year and beyond. Exiled 1989 student leader Zhou Fengsuo says he hopes commemorative events being held online will teach young people on the mainland more about the events of June 4, reports RTHK. He says China's silencing of a doctor who tried to raise the alarm about the coronavirus shows the importance of freedom of speech. "Freedom of speech was one of the demands in the '89 student movement, and the pandemic spreading from Wuhan to the rest of the world was a man-made disaster resulting from China’s authoritarian rule, the lack of freedom of speech, and the government’s attempt to maintain social stability above all," he says
