'Killed by looter:' St. Louis police mourn loss of Capt. David Dorn in overnight violence

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - We're learning more about former St. Louis Police Capt. David Dorn, who was killed by a "looter" early Tuesday morning in St. Louis during a night of violent protests.

His name was released during a Tuesday morning press conference with city officials, including Mayor Lyda Krewson and Police Chief John Hayden.

"(He was killed) during a looting process. David Dorn was exercising law enforcement training that he learned here," Hayden says.

Hayden says officers will wear their black "mourning badge" honor of Dorn on Tuesday.

Police say he was found dead outside Lee's Pawn and Jewelry on Martin Luther King Drive.

One of the people murdered last night was a retired St. Louis City Captain. He was murdered by looters at a pawnshop. He was the type of brother that would’ve given his life to save them if he had to.

Violence is not the answer, whether it’s a citizen or officer.

Former St. Louis Police Chief Tim Fitch shared a photo of the man, calling him, "A true public servant. Protecting & serving all the way to the end."

Dorn retired from the St. Louis Police Department in 2007, after rising to the rank of Captain in his 38 years.

Hayden says 55 businesses were damaged or looted overnight and 25 people were arrested.
