UCLA Professor: People Have No Choice But to Riot

UCLA Professor Robin Kelley suggested this week that black Americans have no choice but to riot in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death. As Kelley explained in a UCLA interview, “My wife asked me this question last night, ‘Do you think this is right?’ I said, ‘What other choice do people have?’”

UCLA posted a series of faculty interviews on its website this week that address the recent social unrest over the death of George Floyd. Breitbart News has reported extensively on the riots that have erupted in major cities around the United States. Rioters have destroyed buildings and looted merchandise from local businesses.

UCLA Professor Robin Kelley argued that Black Americans have no other choice than to protest in the aftermath of Floyd’s death.

“I’m 58 years old now. I don’t remember a year that there wasn’t half a dozen cases, spectacular cases of police violence. You could do a New York Times front page, just like you did of the COVID deaths, and easily get 100,000 names, beginning in 1960, of people who died,” Kelley said. “My wife asked me this question last night, ‘Do you think this is right?’ I said, ‘What other choice do people have?’”

UCLA Professor Darnell Hunt, who teaches sociology and African American studies, argued that the term “riot” is inappropriate.“The term ‘riot’ tends to connote a senseless venting of frustration, of destroying your own community and all these other things that are counterproductive, as if there couldn’t be political value in urban unrest and forcing the system to examine itself,” Hunt said.

Hunt argued that Americans are unfairly prejudiced against “looting” even though many of the looters during the 1992 Los Angeles riots, which erupted after the death of Rodney King, stole basic necessities.

“You had a huge immigrant population that was barely getting by, barely surviving, and people were going to drugstores and ‘looting’ diapers, things to make ends meet in their families,” Hunt added. “To minimize that as just, ‘Oh, people are just looting,’ completely robbed it of the political content and the political possibilities that people are trying to communicate by taking a risk and getting involved.”

Man Charged With Opening Fire on Occupied NYPD Car In Queens

NEW YORK — A 21-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder in the first degree and other crimes for allegedly firing at cops who sat in a patrol car in Far Rockaway Sunday night. The officers heard the shots just before the marked vehicle was jolted by bullets that ripped into the side and rear panel of the car.

District Attorney Melinda Katz said, “Thankfully neither of these officers was struck by the bullets that were fired at them. While we are living through very tumultuous times with demonstrators clashing with police in the streets, this incident was not a protest. This was a targeted attack on our law enforcement as they watched over a neighborhood on a quiet night in Queens. This vile act of gun violence is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. The defendant has been apprehended and will be prosecuted.”

The District Attorney’s Office identified the defendant as Kane Motta, 21, who is known to reside on Elizabeth Avenue in the Arverne section of Queens, as well as on Ayers Road in Sandyston, New Jersey. The defendant was arraigned last night before Queens Criminal Court Judge Mary Berjarano on a complaint charging him with multiple counts of attempted murder in the first degree, attempted assault in the first degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree and assault in the second degree. Judge Berjarano remanded Motta and set his return date for July 2, 2020. If

convicted, the defendant faces between 20 years to life and a maximum of 40 years to life in prison.

District Attorney Katz said that, according to the charges, shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, 2020, Police Officers Fawad Khan and Mark Beneducci sat in a marked patrol car in front of 531 Beach 66th Street in the Far Rockaway neighborhood of Queens. The patrol car was parked and with its lights flashing when both Officers heard a loud popping sound and felt the vehicle rock suddenly.

When they exited the car, the vehicle had bullet holes on the driver’s side at the rear of the car’s storage area and the tailgate. Continuing, the DA said, according to the charges video surveillance of the area showed Motta – who lives just an 8 minute walk from where the police car was parked – in the vicinity at 11:27 p.m. The defendant is allegedly observed on the recording climbing over a fence on Beach 66th Street to get into a backyard where he hid a gun in the wheel well of a parked car at the rear of the driveway.

Rising conspiracy theory claims George Soros behind US unrest, ADL says

Jewish group finds massive uptick in anti-Soros tweets,as right-wing pundits falsely claim the Holocaust survivor billionaire is paying protesters nationwide

WASHINGTON — As mass protests rage across the United States over the police killing of an unarmed black man, right-wing conspiracy theorists have turned to a predictable bogeyman: George Soros.

According to the Anti-Defamation League, a new wave of false claims about the liberal billionaire has surfaced since demonstrations began to oppose systemic racism after George Floyd’s death.

In cities across America over the last week, peaceful protests have descended into violence and mayhem, with clashes between police and the public intensifying Monday after US President Donald Trump threatened to unleash the military on American citizens, and cops fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters in Washington, D.C. and elsewhere.

“We have definitely seen a very dramatic increase in the number of anti-Soros conspiracy theories,” said Aryeh Tuchman, associate director of the ADL’s Center on Extremism. “It has been very common among right-wing pundits and leaders in the media to ascribe the activity on the ground to Soros, who they claim is paying protesters to show up and advance his alleged anti-American agenda.”

That unfounded assertion has been circulating on social media and other platforms frequented by far-right trolls. The group conducted an analysis of Twitter and found that the number of tweets opposing Soros had skyrocketed since the protests began.

“They went from around 20,000 a day to more than 500,000 a day,” he said.

The idea has been advanced by users with massive followings, such as actor and right-wing provocateur James Woods, an ardent supporter of Trump

“Let’s be clear,” he tweeted Monday. “Our problem today is not black versus white. Our problem today is George Soros versus America.”

Woods has 2.4 million Twitter followers.

Graham postpones Russia probe subpoena vote as tensions boil over

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) postponed a vote on authorizing subpoenas for more than 50 individuals as Republicans ramp up their investigation into the Russia probe.

Graham said he was delaying the vote to give senators enough time to fully debate the issue, as the meeting brushed up against a pre-scheduled vote on the Senate floor.

"We're going to do what this committee needs to do, and we're going to fight it out and we're going to vote. And we're not going to be done today, so I don't see a resolution this day, if you need to go somewhere go. … I think the best thing for us to do is [to] carry this over to next week so we can have a full discussion," he said.

He added that "we'll get to [a] conclusion next week" on the subpoena vote.

Graham told The Hill after the meeting that he has the votes on the GOP-controlled committee to authorize the subpoenas but wanted to give members enough time to discuss the investigation first.

Graham's announcement came after a tense moment in the committee, with multiple members yelling at each other as they tried to figure out the schedule for the meeting.

"Can we get a sense of how long we're going to be here? … With all due respect, I don't think anybody in private ever disagrees with me when I say that it's bullshit the way people grandstand for cameras in here. The reality is if we didn't have cameras in this room, the discussion would be different," said Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.).

Sasse added that "90 percent of our committees are about people trolling for soundbites."

"I don't think they're trolling for soundbites, I think they're genuinely upset with what I'm doing," Graham countered.

When Sasse added that his criticism was aimed at members on both sides of the aisle, Graham added: "I don't think I'm trolling for a soundbite, I'm trying to defend what I think we need to be doing as chairman."

"I find the whole concept offensive. … If you've got to go somewhere else go," Graham said.

The exchange between Graham and Sasse followed an argument between the chairman and Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), who were at times yelling as they debated the merits of the GOP investigation.

"This is about a president who just can't get over it, maybe he will never will, and by a chairman who wants him to have another day to make his point about how he was mistreated," Durbin said.

Graham interrupted to say: "With all due respect, I don't buy what you're saying at all."

Utah Guard Sends Green Berets to DC to Assist in Civil Unrest Response

The Utah National Guard deployed teams of Green Berets to Washington, D.C., this week to join thousands of Guard members from 10 states converging on the nation's capital in response to civil unrest near the White House.

Demonstrations over the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died in Minneapolis police custody, have spread across the country and essentially shut down the District of Columbia during the evening hours.

The D.C. National Guard has activated about 1,200 personnel, and about 3,300 Guard members from Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Missouri, Mississippi, New Jersey, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee and Utah have been ordered to D.C. at the request of President Donald Trump.

While some are military police, many other Guard members, with job specialties ranging from aircraft maintainers to supply specialists, now man roadblocks and stand guard at the Lincoln Memorial and other key sites in the city while assisting law enforcement.

Utah sent about 200 soldiers, including Green Berets from the 19th Special Forces Group who were already postured for a deployment and were quickly reassigned after the president's request for support, National Guard officials said.

They flew on a KC-135R aircraft from Roland R. Wright Air National Guard Base in Salt Lake City to Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, on Tuesday, according to Guard officials.

"The Utah Army National Guard sent a number of Special Forces Guardsmen to support civil authority in Washington, D.C.," Master. Sgt. Michael Houk, a spokesman for the National Guard Bureau, said in a statement.

But Guard officials maintain that the Green Berets were simply available and are supporting the effort in D.C. where they are needed, rather than conducting their traditional unconventional warfare mission.

"They are going to send us what they have available," Capt. Kyle Sullivan, spokesman for the D.C. National Guard, told Military.com.

Houk agreed that the Guard mission in D.C. does not require elite specialties for supporting law enforcement.

"The reason they were selected and sent is because they were already prepared for deployment," Houk said.

So far, about 32,400 Guard troops have been activated in 32 states and in D.C. to support the civil unrest response.

In addition, the Pentagon on Monday ordered about 1,600 active-duty soldiers from the Army's XVIII Airborne Corps to deploy to the region in case they are needed to support Guard forces in D.C. The deployment included an infantry battalion from the 82nd Airborne Division and the 16th Military Police Brigade headquarters out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, as well as the 91st MP Battalion from Fort Drum, New York.

Navy Veteran Michael White on His Release From Iran: ‘I Want to Thank President Trump’

President Trump on Thursday announced 48-year-old Navy Veteran Michael White, who had been detained in Iran for over a year and a half, was on a Swiss plane on his way back to the US.

“We expect him to be home with his family in America very soon,” Trump wrote. “I will never stop working to secure the release of all Americans held hostage overseas!”

According to the State Department, White was arrested in the city of Mashhad in 2018 and was sentenced in 2019 to 13 years for insulting Iran’s Supreme Leader and posting private information online.

Michael White’s mother Joanne told the New York Times last year that her son had traveled to Iran to visit his girlfriend.

Joanne White said, “For the past 683 days my son, Michael, has been held hostage in Iran by the (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) and I have been living a nightmare. I am blessed to announce that the nightmare is over, and my son is safely on his way home.”

Michael White thanked President Trump when he landed in the US.
