KABUL, Afghanistan — The U.S. has conducted two airstrikes against the Taliban in Afghanistan, U.S. Forces – Afghanistan said Friday.
The airstrikes were the first by the U.S. against the insurgent group since the start of the Eid ceasefire at the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan in May, USFOR-A spokesman Col. Sonny Leggett said on Twitter.
They were conducted in southern Kandahar province and western Farah province against Taliban fighters who had attacked Afghan army checkpoints, Leggett said.
The terms of a peace deal signed by the U.S. and Taliban in February allow the U.S. to attack the Taliban to defend Afghan forces, he said.
“All sides must reduce violence to allow the peace process to take hold,” Leggett said.
The U.S. has conducted airstrikes against the Taliban in Afghanistan as the insurgent group attacked Afghan security forces, a spokesman for the U.S.-led NATO mission in the country said.
