Blumenthal was born in Chicago, to Jewish parents, Claire (née Stone) and Hyman V. Blumenthal.[11] He earned a BA in Sociology from Brandeis University in 1969, and started his career in Boston as a journalist who wrote for the Boston Phoenix and the Real Paper, Quad Monthly-issued publications
