Calcium Carbide is mixed with water to create acetylene. You can make some nasty booby traps and incendiary devices with it. We used carbide lamps in mining years ago. We could buy it at the hardware store and use it for lamps or for a "carbide cannon". Great fun noisemaker. My ears are still ringing.
