Yeah. I think there are popes that legitimately believe that their way is the right way to God, but then there are those who were absolute scum with only their own power and wealth in mind. Unfortunately, that kind of thing seems to be the reason the RCC has its wealth and power (Jesus also warned against hoarding wealth in this world btw). Our God is one we can have a personal relationship with! That's the amazing thing. The creator of the entire universe wants to know us personally, without some 'specially ordained' person in between. No 'priests'. The only one who intercedes with the Father for us would be Jesus, who is also the only priest, being our 'High Priest'. Mary and the saints, etc, are people who lived notable lives, but are just people, the same as us.
