The Narrative (Part 1)
It has been said that we are in the information age and that information is the new gold. So why is data so valuable? To answer that question let’s first take a look at 3 different movies.
-The Matrix (Series)
-The Adjustment Bureau
-The Imitation Game
The Matrix
What is the Matrix?
According to the movie the Matrix is a system of control. An alternate reality created to distract the minds of all who are connected in order to harvest their energy.
Important Notes:
-As stated in the second movie of the series, one version of the Matrix was a failure. Connected users rejected the reality because it was too perfect.
-The Matrix was not successful until it was capable of accounting for choice.
-While a non-user(someone that has at some point been disconnected from the Matrix and is conscious of what the Matrix is) is interfaced with it(inside the Matrix and interacting with it and those connected to it), any users(those still being harvested for their energy and believing the Matrix to be a true reality), are a direct threat. If at any point, a user witnesses a non-user acting/behaving in a way that goes against the rules set by the Matrix, a response is triggered where a “program”(a seemingly unstoppable agent) overrides the users consciousness and attempts(most often succeeds) to attack and destroy the non-user.
The Adjustment Bureau
What is the Adjustment Bureau?
According to the movie the Adjustment Bureau is an entity whose purpose is to ensure humanity follows a predetermined narrative based on probability. In this movie, agents of the Bureau step in to correct the course of the main character after he encounters a woman. By interacting with this woman he has put the grand narrative at risk and they are forced to take action in order to ensure the narrative comes to fruition.
Important Notes:
-The Bureau acts under the direction of a seemingly supernatural force but does not use supernatural powers to change the course of the people inside the narrative. Instead, it is up to the Bureau to alter/influence events in order to ensure the success of the narrative.
The Imitation Game
What is the Imitation Game?
Well, let’s get to that a little later but the movie is a depiction of how one man(Alan Turing) came up with the idea to create a machine that could decipher any encryption that the Enigma(Encryption tool used by the Axis forces in WWII) was set at and was credited as winning the war for the Allied forces. The Enigma allowed for “159 million million million” possible settings that were changed everyday which made it impossible to decipher on a day by day basis without the aid of a machine.
Important Note:
-There is a point in the movie when the team has cracked the Enigma and have now tracked the location of every single enemy deployment. They even realized that there was about to be an attack on one of the Allied ships. There is some additional drama added due to the ship being the same vessel that one of the team member’s brother is stationed on but an argument ensues as to whether or not they should alert the ship. Alerting the ship could save everyone on it including the brother, but it would also alert the Germans to the possibility that the Enigma had been cracked and undermine all of the progress they had made.
