Solve et coagula is a maxim or motto of Alchemy which means "dissolve and coagulate". It means that something must be broken down before it can be built up. One interpretation of this saying is to dissolve the body and build up the spirit. [1].

Solve Et Coagula is also seen on images of Baphomet, on the arms. Solve is on Baphomet's right arm with a hand pointing up at a crescent sun, and Et Coagula is on Baphomet's left arm with a hand point down towards the moon. The most popular, widely available, and frequently cited image of Baphomet, was created by French occultist, alchemist, and political socialist Éliphas Lévi Zahed (Alphonse Louis Constant), whose name is also visible on the image of Baphomet.
