Actually, eat my flesh and drink my blood is what Jesus asked us to do. Matthew 26:26-29. He's not saying, eat this piece of bread and pretend it's my flesh. He's saying it literally IS his flesh.
When a Catholic receives the wafer and wine, it is actually embued with the substance of the living God, becoming His flesh and blood. It is no longer merely bread and wine. Consuming this in faith brings that substance of God, that essence, into the being of the receiver - strengthening the connection between the communicant and God.
Jesus said the hard words, (John 6:53) "unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you." Many could not understand what he meant, and left after that.
The Point: All the (little g) gods had demanded the flesh and blood of humans to quench their hunger and thirst. But Jesus, the son of the true God and God Incarnate, offers us HIS blood, HIS flesh - the complete reversal of the evil ones' demands.
God gives us life. The little g gods take our lives. God loves us. The little g gods hate us. God gives us free will. The little g gods demand we submit and become slaves to them.
God creates. The little g gods can only destroy.
