Deputy killed, 2 other officers injured after being ambushed in Santa Cruz County

BEN LOMOND, Calif. – A Santa Cruz County sheriff's deputy was killed and two law enforcement officers wounded Saturday when they were ambushed with gunfire and explosives while pursuing a suspect, according to authorities.

The sheriff's office received a report at 1:30 p.m. of a suspicious van with guns and bomb-making devices inside.

When deputies arrived, they saw the van leave and followed the vehicle, according to Sheriff Jim Hart. As the vehicle pulled into a driveway on Waldeberg Drive, the officers were ambushed with gunfire and many improvised explosives after getting out of their vehicle, he added.

"In my 32-year career, this is the worst day I've ever experienced," Sheriff Jim Hart said as he began the news conference.

Sergeant Damon Gutzwiller, 38, was wounded and taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. A second deputy was injured, and a third officer from the California Highway Patrol was shot in his hand, Hart said. The two officers have not been identified and officials say they are hopeful they will recover.

The suspect, Steven Carrillo, was shot during his arrest and was being treated at the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, Hart said. Carillo is now facing several charges, including murder, assault with a deadly weapon and carjacking.

The Sheriff's Department and the FBI are investigating.

Texas Ranger Statue Removed At Dallas Love Field

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM/AP) – A statue of a Texas Ranger inside Dallas Love Field airport was removed Thursday due to an excerpt from an upcoming book, officials said.

Officials said the “One Riot, One Ranger” statue, which was donated to the city in 1963, is a depiction of a Texas Ranger who will be mentioned in a forthcoming book.

A new book on the Rangers, “Cult of Glory,” offered chilling details about dark chapters of the Rangers’ history. The book by former Pulitzer Prize finalist Doug J. Swanson, a longtime reporter for The Dallas Morning News who is now on the University of Pittsburgh faculty, says the statue depicts Capt. Jay Banks. The captain was in charge of a Ranger contingent dispatched in 1957 by then-Gov. Allan Shivers to keep black students from enrolling in Mansfield’s high school High School and a Texarkana community college despite court rulings that should have prevented Shivers from doing so.

HPD: Several gunshots fired at police station in southeast Houston

HOUSTON — The search continues for possibly multiple shooters after gunfire was reported at the Houston Police Department's South-East Division Station early Sunday morning.

Chief Art Acevedo tweeted that as of 1:37 a.m. a containment area was set up with the search still on-going.

It was about 12:45 a.m. when officers heard approximately 50 to 60 rounds of gunfire they believe were targeting the station located at 8300 Mykawa Road, according to Assistant Chief Darren Edwards.

Officers believe the gunshots came from a rifle and also possibly a pistol. Some of the gunfire reportedly went right over the heads of officers.

Police said they found vehicle tracks along the bayou south of the station, but they couldn't immediately locate shell casings.

A police helicopter and K9 support were brought in to try to locate the gunmen however, no suspects were found.

No officers were injured and it’s unclear if the station received any damage.

Genetically Modified Mosquitoes Cleared For Release In The US

A company called Oxitec has received an experimental use permit from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to release genetically modified mosquitos into the wild. This would be the first time that such an experiment was attempted within the borders of the US, and the permit would allow for the release of millions of genetically modified mosquitos each week over the next two years. The genetically modified insects will be released in Florida and Texas, but they will easily be able to travel throughout the country from there.

The mosquitos are likely only being deployed in Texas and Florida for now, because the company needs approval from each individual state in addition to federal EPA approval. A previously planned release in the Florida Keys of an earlier version of Oxitec’s GM mosquito was canceled in 2016 after push back from local residents about the potential dangers.

Scientists hope that these genetically modified mosquitos can help eliminate diseases that are typically carried by mosquitos, such as dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika.

The plan is that these genetically modified male mosquitos will mate with wild females, and their genetics will cause the children to die, and should cause a collapse of the wild population.

However, there is growing concern among scientists that this technology may not be ready for deployment, and that the risks have not been studied thoroughly enough. Many scientists are warning about the potential unintended consequences that can come from unleashing such insects into the wild. For example, researchers are entirely unaware of what type of allergic reactions that these insects could cause if they interact with people.
