When Jesus said "turn the other cheek" what did he mean?
In the time of Jesus when a Roman soldier or any person of rank passed by all people present were to 'take a knee'
Jesus said, don't do that and when they come to chastise you for not kneeling and they strike you, instead of taking the knee, turn the other cheek. In other words the soldier would have to knock you down, that you would refuse to "take a knee" voluntarily
"turn the other cheek" meant that you should NOT strike the soldier back but make the soldier knock you down.
A form of extreme civil disobedience because hitting the soldier would get you killed. But standing and "turning the other cheek" without raising your hand against the soldier was a passive resistance to kneeling.
