George W. Bush Spox Says NYT Article Claiming He Won’t Be Voting For Trump ‘Is Completely Made Up’

Former President George W. Bush’s spokesman vehemently denied an article from the New York Times that alleged he would not be voting for President Donald Trump in 2020.

The NYT reported Saturday that a slew of high-profile Republicans do not plan on supporting Trump’s reelection. Included in that list was Bush, and the NYT cited “people familiar with their thinking.”

“This is completely made up,” Bush’s spokesman Freddy Ford said in an email according to the Texas Tribune. “He is retired from presidential politics and has not indicated how he will vote.” (RELATED: Bush Office Thanks Trump For Support Amid State Funeral)

The NYT has not yet updated its article with Ford’s statement denying the report.

“Freddy Ford, a spokesman for Mr. Bush, said the former president would stay out of the election and speak only on policy issues, as he did this week in stating that the country must ‘examine our tragic failures’ on race,” the NYT article does note.

Other Republicans who reportedly won’t be voting for Trump this year include Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, Arizona Sen. John McCain’s widow Cindy McCain, and former Secretary of State Colin Powell, the NYT reported.

Powell has been vocal about his decision, saying on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday that he “cannot in any way support President Trump this year.”

The S&P 500 on Monday erased its losses for the year, surpassing its closing level for 2019 as investors bet on a robust economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.

The S&P 500 closed up 38.5 points, or 1.2 percent, at 3,232. That was 17 points higher than its close on New Year's Eve.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 461 points, or 1.7 percent, closing at 27,572. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq advanced as well, adding 110.7 points, or 1.1 percent, to approach 10,000 for the first time. Last week, the technology-heavy index notched a record high, erasing all its pandemic losses.

Stocks rise as surprise May jobs rebound boosts recovery hopes

The optimism in markets comes as cities and states reopen, and preliminary data points to an unexpectedly early turnaround in unemployment.

But analysts warn that the initial employment figures announced Friday contain bad news beyond the better-than-expected 13.3 percent unemployment rate. While the jobs figure for May was positive, it also indicated that millions more people were not counted because they dropped out of the labor force, were working only part time or were otherwise misclassified.

States such as Texas and Florida that opened their economies early have also begun to see a spike in COVID-19 cases, which could portend another wave of closures further down the line. Weeks of social unrest and mass racial justice protests have also increased chances of new outbreaks of the virus.

>>9538546 Facebook moderators call on Cuckerberg to honor “Black employees and users” and censor President Trump

notable

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has shown a metered reaction towards Trump’s recent posts about the protests. While other social media platforms have taken action and censored the President, Facebook’s decision not to isn’t sitting well with some of its employees.

We’ve already discussed the ways employees are expressing anger at management over the decision – and now it appears Facebook moderators are the next to voice their dissatisfaction.

It is worth noting that Facebook moderators are bound by NDAs which prevent them from revealing their identity. They are, therefore, forced to be anonymous while voicing their concerns.

“We need to express that Mr Zuckerberg’s words about personal dismay caused by Trump’s ‘looting and shooting’ rhetoric are not enough. The benefit of the doubt this politician is being given as a user, even with such a large platform, is unparalleled – the attempt to retroactively place his words behind the context of other posts actually has had effect of putting it on an isolated pedestal. This may be the ultimate exhibit of white exceptionality and further legitimization of state brutality we have witnessed in the last weeks,” read an excerpt from the letter.

The moderators, who have collectively penned the letter, further say that work from home has alienated them further and that they are restricted from voicing out their concerns boldly.

“We are not able to speak freely because we communicate mainly on the company channels. It’s really tricky to even talk about it, to find someone and ask if they want to sign this sort of statement.”

The co-founder of Foxglove, the legal nonprofit organization that has coordinated the letter by Facebook moderators, said that the company should pay more attention to what the moderators have to say, considering the fact that they are on the frontlines of battling “hate speech” on the platform on a regular basis.

The letter concluded by asking Zuckerberg and the management to reconsider their decision regarding Trump’s comments and to honor the “voices of its Black employees and users”.

>>9538513 Jeffrey Epstein Case Judge Has Ties to Cops Who Want to Keep Records Secret

notable

Judge Krista Marx did not disclose any potential conflicts of interest when ruling not to release grand jury records related to disgraced financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, despite having connections to those involved in the case.

Epstein was first investigated in 2005 by the Palm Beach Police Department after a women alleged her 14-year-old stepdaughter had been taken to Epstein's mansion and paid $300 to strip and massage him. The investigation resulted in the police filing a probable cause affidavit in May 2006, suggesting Epstein be charged with four counts of unlawful sex with minors and one count of sexual abuse.

Former Florida State Attorney Barry Krischer declined to prosecute Epstein on these charges. Instead, he took the unusual step of convening a grand jury—something generally only done in capital cases—and presented evidence from two victims. The grand jury charged Epstein with one count of felony solicitation of prostitution.

Marx is the Chief Judge in the 15th Judicial Circuit of Florida in Palm Beach, Florida. Marx was formerly employed by Krischer. In addition, Marx's daughter works as an assistant state attorney for current State Attorney Dave Aronberg, while her son is a sheriff's deputy under Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, according to information uncovered by the Miami Herald's Julie K. Brown. Brown has written a number of articles for the Herald exposing Epstein.

Aronberg, along with county clerk Sharon Bock, was sued by The Palm Beach Post to release the grand jury records. Marx dismissed the case Wednesday without disclosing that she had any connection to the defendant.

In January, after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis ordered an investigation into why Krischer decided not to prosecute Epstein—or even speak to Epstein's accusers or their parents, according to The Palm Beach Post—and why Bradshaw allegedly allowed Epstein to have sex with women while in sheriff's custody, Marx also refused to unseal the records, characterizing the request as a "fishing expedition."

A "fishing expedition" is legal slang for when a prosecutor makes a non-specific search for information by calling for all the documents related to a case. Though the tactic is legal, it is often seen as an attempt by prosecutors to bolster a weak case by combing through mountains of information to look for anything incriminating.

When confronted by the Herald about Brown's findings, Marx declined to comment.

"A judge is prohibited from commenting on open cases. It is a clear rule of the judicial canons," Marx said.

Newsweek reached out to the ACLU for comment. This story will be updated with any response.

After the 2005 investigation and the 2006 grand jury, the FBI began investigating Epstein, filing a 53-page indictment in June 2007. Alexander Acosta, then a South Florida U.S. attorney, offered Epstein a controversial plea deal, which granted immunity from all federal charges to Epstein as well as four co-conspirators named in the indictment as well as any unnamed "potential co-conspirators." In return, Epstein was convicted as a sex offender and given an 18-month prison sentence, but only served 13 months with the ability to leave daily for work.

The trial of three Chinese nationals ended on June 5 according to a report from CNN.

The first of these Chinese nationals sentenced was the 27-year-old Liao Lyuyou, who received a one-year sentence in prison after pleading guilty for illegally entering the restricted area within Naval Air Station Key West in December and taking photos and videos.
