so why did the Puritans wind up in cold New England instead of nice warm Virginia, or Georgia?

 

Because the British East India Company owned some land for them to settle on, but it was in Massachusetts not somewhere nicer.

That's what I read anyway, it was an interesting history of slavery that included other things happening at the time.

 

Reading old sources has never failed to turn up surprising facts for me. Like: the Spanish owned Louisiana Territory, but they needed to sell it to pay debts. They didn't want to sell it to USA, because we would become too powerful. But the French agreed to buy it. Little did the Spanish know that the French would flip it to the USA within a week, the whole deal planned out by Jefferson.

 

And once we had Louisiana Territory, the Spanish eventually gave up, sold us Florida too and left.

 

That one came from a history of the Lewis and Clark expedition.

He's probably just lucky he got sent to the Pacific war instead of the Atlantic side. But being in the Navy helped with that.
