S. Korean kidnapped by pirates off Gabon released
A South Korean national kidnapped off the coast of Gabon last month has been released unharmed, Seoul's foreign ministry said Tuesday.
The man in his 50s was among six crew members abducted after unidentified pirates attacked their fishing boats near the Gabonese capital of Libreville in West Africa in early May.
The five others have also been released safely, the ministry said.
The South Korean remains in a secure place offered by the South Korean mission in Nigeria and will return home as soon as a flight is arranged, the ministry added. (Yonhap)
https://www.rt.com/news/491102-floyd-protests-color-revolution/
There is no need to speculate any longer about the odd similarities between ‘color revolution’ regime change operations overseas and the current protests across the US, when a leading purveyor of ‘Russiagate’ outright admits it.
What the US is experiencing now is “more like the nonviolent movements that earned broad societal support in places such as Serbia, Ukraine, and Tunisia,” the Atlantic’s Franklin Foer said on Saturday, in a piece titled ‘The Trump Regime Is Beginning to Topple’.
He makes no mention of the US government’s role in any of these events – even in Ukraine, where US diplomats handed out cookies to “protesters,” and senators like John McCain shared the stage with their leaders.
Nor does he gush about a US operation of “engineering democracy through the ballot box and civil disobedience” emerging as a “template for winning other people’s elections,” as the Guardian described the 2004 turmoil in Kiev, and directly linked with the 2000 events in Serbia.
Instead, Foer says it’s “astonishing” that the events in the US over the past week have “traced the early phases” of Ukraine’s 2014 Maidan revolt. He cites Sharp’s advice to revolutionaries to focus on destroying the “regime” by turning the media, business elites, and police against it. Twitter’s censorship of Trump was a “hinge moment,” he says, and other major corporations followed when it turned out “there was little price to pay for the choice.”
Then again, he is not just any ordinary journalist, but the famous author of the article (published by Slate in October 2016, just before the election) alleging that communications between a Trump Organization email server and Russia’s Alfa Bank were proof of his “collusion” with the Kremlin.

Kiwi’s have suffered an anomalously frigid autumn 2020 thus far, and the latest forecasts reveal things could potentially turn historic by the weekend.
Niwa meteorologist Ben Noll said this coming weekend temperatures could get “very, very cold”, particularly across the South Island.
“We are talking about temperatures as cold as -15C (5F) in some low-lying areas about the alps on Saturday morning, creating some pretty frosty conditions,” continued Noll. “These are some pretty extreme cold anomalies, so no doubt people will have to watch out for things like black ice.”
This weekend’s coming freeze is in part due an approaching high pressure system — one of the strongest systems on the planet, according to Niwa
The setup is effectively pulling brutal Antarctic air anomalously-far north, and is also expected to deliver NZ another spell of dry weather.
For Auckland, Niwa has forecast dry and settled conditions over the next 7 to 10 days — not good news for farmers and growers in the region that are still dealing with a rainfall deficit of around 240mm this year, reports the nzherald

Nine firefighters responding to a fire aboard a ship in Florida have been hospitalized after the ship exploded, injuring eight and sending one to a hospital for heat exhaustion, authorities said.
The explosion occurred nearly three hours after firefighters first responded to a ship at Blount Island after reports of a fire on Thursday afternoon, the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department tweeted. The ship, a Norwegian vessel called Hoegh Xiamen was carrying old and used cars and had been scheduled to leave Jacksonville, First Coast News reported.
The shipping company thanked the fire department in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with those firefighters and their families who were injured during this response.”
Investigators are trying to determine what caused the fire.

Former employees from Pacific Seafood in Newport say the COVID-19 outbreak happening now is due to the importation of workers from California, which they say has resulted in 124 confirmed cases as of Sunday, June 7.
James Nelson, a 10-year veteran at Pacific Seafood, said he had to quit his job May 8, “due to the COVID-19 virus,” and said he was forced to resign after expressing concern over the company bringing in “100+ migrant workers” from California to process seafood in Newport.
Nelson said he would not put his family’s safety in jeopardy because implanting workers from a more contaminated area was too dangerous. He brought his concerns to managerial staff and said some had their own concerns, but they told him the higher-ups made the decisions.

Several Chinese fighter jets flew over Taiwan's airspace on Tuesday (June 9) following reports of a U.S. Navy transport jet seen flying directly over Taiwan.
The Ministry of National Defense said several Sukhoi-30 (Su-30) fighter jets briefly flew over the southwestern part of the nation's Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), and Taiwan's Air Force quickly responded by broadcasting an order to drive them away.
The ministry said it has closely monitored the nation's surrounding airspace and has taken proactive measures to ensure the island's security.
It was the ninth time this year that Chinese military aircraft have been seen close to Taiwan's airspace. The presence of Chinese military aircraft this year was recorded on Jan. 23, Feb. 9, Feb. 10, Feb. 28, March 16, April 10, May 8, and May 16.
The planes crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and into the island nation's airspace on Feb. 10. The Chinese maneuvers were usually soon followed by sightings of U.S. military jets around Taiwan's airspace.

Many critics of the agreement have argued that the accord has made religious freedom in China worse, and the CCP has used it as cover for intensifying its persecution of Christians.
Last January, the bipartisan Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC) released its annual report on human rights conditions and rule of law developments in China, finding an overall deterioration of religious liberty in China over the year 2019.
“In September 2018, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs signed an agreement with the Holy See, paving the way for the unification of state-sanctioned and underground Catholic communities,” the report stated. “Subsequently, local Chinese authorities subjected Catholic believers in China to increased persecution by demolishing churches, removing crosses, and continuing to detain underground clergy.”
“The Party-led Catholic national religious organizations also published a plan to ‘sinicize’ Catholicism in China,” the report continued, referring to the stated aim of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) of forcing all religions to conform their teachings and practices to the party line.
The report concluded that the situation of Catholics in China is now worse than it was before the Vatican signed its 2018 accord with the CCP.
“Observers and Catholic believers expressed concern that the agreement did not provide sufficient support for the Chinese Catholic community, with one scholar pointing out that the authorities’ persecution of both underground and official Catholic communities has actually intensified over the last year under the ‘sinicization’ campaign,” it said.
http://www.hawaiifreepress.com/ArticlesMain/tabid/56/ID/25730/Debate-Jones-Act-Necessary-for-National-Security.aspx
The Honolulu Star Advertiser published on June 6, 2020, a letter to the editor, ”Jones Act necessary for maritime security,” submitted by Capt. Larry Osborn, U.S. Navy (ret.) and currently President, Honolulu Council of the Navy League of the U.S., a pro-Jones Act organization.
Capt. Osborn also maintains a small consulting business, Pacific Associates Inc., with himself as its single employee, offering consultancy to the Defense Department and defense contractors.
“This is simple. Without the Jones Act we would not have a U.S.-flagged Merchant Marine. Without U.S.-flagged vessels, our expeditionary forces (Navy and Marine Corps) cannot defend us in Hawaii.”
It’s important to understand the simple fact that the Jones Act, or that body of laws and regulations known formally in American jurisprudence as the “coastwise laws of the U.S.,” apply only to domestic maritime activities conducted within U.S. waters and between U.S. places and not to the foreign trade of the U.S.
The support of “expeditionary forces” operating in response to overseas contingencies rely on seaborne logistical support known as “sealift” performed by self-propelled oceangoing ships in the foreign trade of the U.S. Virtually no sealift is provided by Jones Act ships, which are typically dedicated to domestic trading and not available for sealift.
Sealift is organized by the Military Sealift Command (MSC) employing non-Jones Act-eligible ships from several sources.
“The foreign-flagged vessels will not be in Hawaii ports in time of crisis or conflict.” This appears to be in response to my presentation of the facts that there are foreign flag cargo ships in Hawaii harbors virtually on a daily basis and more cargo by volume is imported on foreign flag ships than from the U.S. mainland on Jones Act ships. The cargoes arriving from foreign sources on foreign flag ships are largely but not exclusively bulk commodities, without which the Hawaii State economy would not operate. Since the end of World War II in 1945, there has not been a disruption of foreign flag ship deliveries to Hawaii, despite the many crises and conflict (e.g., the Korean War, Vietnam War, etc.) during this time period.
Finally, Osborne writes, “Whatever small price we pay [for the Jones Act] as consumers in Hawaii (if any, as the economics on this issue are disputed) is money well spent [for our collective national security].” There is, however, no dispute that the cost of constructing an oceangoing merchant ship in the U.S. (to comply with the domestic build requirement of the Jones Act) is four to five times that of comparable ship construction in South Korea and Japan. This disparity in capital costs has a material effect producing significantly higher domestic freight rates and severely limited ship availability in Jones Act trades, which results in the importation of foreign commodities and goods (a phenomena known as “import substitution”).

World Bank names S. Korea ‘COVID-19 safe spot’
The World Bank has decided to name Korea as a medical evacuation destination to take care of the emergent medical needs of its employees located in the East Asia and Pacific region,” the ministry said in a statement.
“The decision was based on the World Bank’s positive appraisal of Korea’s advanced medical standards and its successful quarantine experiences.”
“Since the (outbreak of) COVID-19, the World Bank has been seeking ways to diversify its pool of medical evacuation destinations,” the ministry said.
Taking into account the likeliness that the World Bank may add Korea to its list of medical evacuation centers, the government has made active responses to the agency’s inquiries and requests, including the issuance of reports.

Prosecutors’ plans to wrap up a yearlong investigation of alleged financial fraud by Samsung Group affiliates faced a setback Tuesday, when a court denied arrest warrants for the group’s de facto chief and two other former executives.
Now that the Seoul Central District Court has decided not to detain Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong or former Samsung executives Choi Ji-sung and Kim Jong-joong, the prosecution is weighing its options.
It could seek the warrants again, or it could indict the trio without detention.

Abuse by a priest causes “double-damage,” she said, calling a “soul-murderer,” because not only does the priest represent God, but because of that, the victim loses their “sense of spiritual solace and healing.”
“Ongoing silence and denial” in the Church, “where the truth should set us free, is compounding the damage,” she said, insisting that “The sexual abuse of children and vulnerable in society is not just about a few bad priests, this is a much deeper, systemic issue.”
Children nowadays are also growing up with the image of the “priest pedophile,” she said, noting that in the past, children were often raised to view priests as being on pedestals, with a “super special status.”
Now, however, children are growing up seeing headlines about pedophile priests, and they might not know good and holy priests, Kenny said, insisting that “This is a serious issue for all of us.”

After China's FC-31 stealth fighter jet appeared in the most recent pilot recruitment video for the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy, speculations increased that the aircraft could become China's next-generation aircraft carrier-based fighter jet.
According to the website of the PLA Navy's pilot recruitment program, pilot cadets will study five years before graduation. In these five years, the FC-31, which is still under development, could complete the necessary upgrades and join the PLA Navy.
China reportedly plans to develop a carrier-capable variant of its J-20 fifth-generation stealth fighter and/or a carrier-capable variant of its FC-31 fifth-generation stealth fighter to complement or succeed the J-15 on catapult-equipped Chinese carriers.
The FC-31 is being manufactured by Peoples Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, an affiliate of Aviation Industry Corporation of China.

Beijing's territorial claims, known as the nine-dash line - owing to the markings printed on Chinese maps of the region - are by far the largest and encompass almost the entirety of the sea, from Hainan Island down to the top of Indonesia. China's claims have no basis under international law and were found to be invalid in a 2016 international court ruling.
Despite this, from about 2015 the Chinese government began to bolster its territorial ambitions by building artificial islands on reefs and shoals in the South China Sea, and then militarizing them with aircraft strips, harbors and radar facilities.
"These (islands) are bristling with radar and surveillance capabilities, they see everything that goes on in the South China Sea," Polling said.
"In the past, China didn't know where you were drilling. Now they certainly do."
Experts say Beijing has created an armada of coast guard and Chinese fishing vessels that can be deployed in the South China Sea to harass other claimant's ships or sail in politically sensitive areas.
The confrontation over the Malaysian drill ship wasn't the first act of aggression by the Chinese government in the region in 2020.
The year began with a standoff in the Natuna Islands on the far southern end of the South China Sea, territory claimed by China and Indonesia. Vessels from both countries were involved in the standoff, which began when Chinese fishing vessels started to operate inside Indonesia's exclusive economic zone.
Eventually, Indonesia deployed F-16 fighters and naval ships to the islands and President Joko Widodo personally flew to the area, in an unusual show of strength from the country.
In April, a Chinese maritime surveillance vessel rammed and sank a Vietnamese fishing boat near the disputed Paracel Islands in the South China Sea.
The act prompted Vietnam to send a diplomatic note to the United Nations restating its sovereignty over its exclusive economic zone in the South China Sea. Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang responded by saying China would take "all measures necessary" to safeguard Beijing's interests in the region.
"I want to stress this: attempts by any country to negate in any means China's sovereignty, rights and interests in the South China Sea and to reinforce its own illegal claim are bound to be fruitless," Geng said.
