Here, I'll give YOU a clue. in fact, I'll give you three of them:
1) Amazon is doing nothing more than every bulk mailer does. I'd also point out that when you drop a piece of mail or a package off at the post office, YOU are also sorting by zip, if not zip +4. YOU are also delivering to the PO. YOU do not get Sunday delivery. YOU pay full retail.
2) Amazon STILL does not pay the full break even cost of delivery. Other mailers DO. No business can exist on "break even". Jeff Bezos did not become the world's wealthiest man by providing services at "break even".
3) Amazon is the ONLY shipper that gets Sunday service. If something else arrives on a Sunday, it's because your shit from Amazon "is here".
If the PO is going to make stupid business deals that favor ONE COMPANY, then the US taxpayer should not be called upon to subsidize their folly.
