President Trump may use executive order to address policing: White House

WASHINGTON (REUTERS) - US President Donald Trump could take policy action on race and policing via an executive order, his spokesman told Fox News in an interview on Wednesday (June 10), as lawmakers in Congress move forward with their proposals.

"We do believe that we'll have proactive policy prescriptions, whether that means legislation or an executive order," White House spokesman Kayleigh McEnany said. She declined to offer specifics, saying the Republican President was still weighing various possibilities.

The potential for executive action comes as both Democrats and Republicans in Congress push forward with proposals aimed at addressing police reform amid massive protests sparked by last month's death of George Floyd, a black man in Minneapolis who died after a white police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

House Democrats on Monday unveiled a sweeping Bill that would ban chokeholds, require body cameras for federal law enforcement officers, and restrict the use of lethal force, among other steps, while Senate Republicans on Tuesday said were working on their own proposal.

The Portuguese rediscovering their country’s Muslim past

Lisbon, Portugal – After fleeing war in his native Iraq, Abdulsattar risked his life on a perilous boat trip from Turkey to Greece.

Once in Greece, he was offered resettlement in Portugal, a country he knew very little about. But he was able to find some familiar features.

“I found many common words,” he explains before beginning to list them. Some relate to food, others to cities or regions. Then there is the expression “oxala” (pronounced oshallah), a direct descendent of the Arabic “inshallah”. Both mean “God willing”.

No more foreign

It should not be too surprising that Arabic influences can still be found in the Portuguese language. For centuries, the region was ruled by Arabic-speaking Muslims known as Moors.

In the 8th century, Muslims sailed from North Africa and took control of what is now Portugal and Spain. Known in Arabic as al-Andalus, the region joined the expanding Umayyad Empire and prospered under Muslim rule. But that legacy has been largely forgotten in the predominantly Catholic country.

Orange County health official resigns amid pushback over face mask order

The chief health officer in Orange County, Calif., resigned this week after receiving pushback — and even death threats — over her mandate that everyone in the county wear face masks amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to new reports.

Dr. Nichole Quick faced immediate resistance from residents and elected officials when she issued the face mask mandate in late May, The Los Angeles Times reported.

During a county board of supervisors meeting last month, a woman who identified herself as an attorney disparaged Quick’s experience in the medical field and even read her home address out loud.

The woman threatened to take a group to Quick’s home and “do calisthenics in masks on her front doorstep” in an attempt to prove that face coverings are unsafe, according to the Times.

She echoed other critics’ claims that face masks can pose a danger to people’s oxygen levels.
