Total US Debt Increases By $1 Trillion In One Month

It took the US over two centuries to accumulate its first trillion dollars in Federal debt, a number which was surpassed for the first time in the fourth quarter of 1981.

Fast forward less then 40 years to today, when according to the US Treasury, total US debt just surpassed $26 trillion, or $26,003,751,512,344.91 as of June 9, to be exact.

What is stunning, however, is the recent pace of increase: total debt was "only" $23.5 trillion on March 23, the day the Fed unleashed unlimited QE, meaning that in two and a half months, the US has added $2.5 trillion in debt.

And the punchline: the US added the last trillion dollars in the shortest time on record, achieving this remarkable feat in just one month, since May 4, when total debt was just under $25 trillion.

Amazon Halts Use Of 'Racist' Facial Recognition Software By Police

As we have detailed numerous times over the past few years (here, here, here, and here), facial recognition systems are becoming more and more mainstream and accepted by an increasing number of 'average joes' around the world as the cost of security (or just ease of life).

The problem is, as we detailed previously, for some segments of society, it is wildly inaccurate.

During a test run by the ACLU of Northern California, facial recognition misidentified 26 members of the California legislature as people in a database of arrest photos.

Specifically, after Oakland and San Francisco voted against the use of facial recognition, Rep. Tashida Tlaib claimed that “the error rate among African-Americans, especially women,” was 60 percent.

And that perhaps explains Jeff Bezos' sudden decision - just a day after IBM loudly proclaimed its decision top quit the facial recognition business - to halt sales of its Rekognition system to police forces in America:

We’re implementing a one-year moratorium on police use of Amazon’s facial recognition technology. We will continue to allow organizations like Thorn, the International Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and Marinus Analytics to use Amazon Rekognition to help rescue human trafficking victims and reunite missing children with their families.

We’ve advocated that governments should put in place stronger regulations to govern the ethical use of facial recognition technology, and in recent days, Congress appears ready to take on this challenge. We hope this one-year moratorium might give Congress enough time to implement appropriate rules, and we stand ready to help if requested.

NYC detectives' union turns the tables, vows to sue George Floyd rioters who attack officers

NEW YORK CITY – The focus of so much of the recent George Floyd protests has been on police violence against demonstrators and others, but in New York City, the union that represents NYPD detectives is turning the tables.

"If you assault a New York City Detective and there are no consequences from the criminal justice system, we have to have other means to protect our detectives," said Paul DiGiacomo, president of the Detectives' Endowment Association, which has represented some 19,000 current and former detectives. He vowed to sue any protestor, rioter or looter who attacked its members.

"It's heart-wrenching because they are out there doing a job under very difficult circumstances, trying to protect the innocent people that are protesting while the criminal element is within that group, assaulting, looting and victimizing not only police officers and detectives out there, but also the people of the city."

The first lawsuit has been filed against a looting suspect accused of stealing items from a pharmacy in Manhattan and who allegedly attacked Detective Joseph Nicolosi. The detective claimed he was injured in the struggle when the 19-year-old suspect resisted arrest.

"They've had urine thrown at them, rocks thrown at them, shot at, assaulted. I don't know how much more they could take a day of putting up with a lot out there. And, you know, they are the finest in the world and they are doing a fabulous job, but they are being demonized by the elected officials," DiGiacomo said.

Obama AG Loretta Lynch to advise New York in probe of NYPD in wake of George Floyd protests

New York state officials announced Wednesday that Loretta Lynch, who served as attorney general in President Obama's administration from 2015 to 2017, will "help guide and support" authorities' ongoing investigation into the NYPD's interactions with the public in the wake of George Floyd protests.

The move came despite concerns over the numerous consent decrees that Lynch's Justice Department (DOJ) arranged with police departments, which observers said actually increased crime rates by disincentivizing policing and causing police to pull out of dangerous neighborhoods.

The consent decrees asserted that numerous police departments across the country were engaged in systemic racism. Critics, however, said the DOJ was improperly concluding that disparate enforcement numbers were necessarily evidence of police racism.

“There is no greater responsibility of government than the protection of its citizens,” Lynch said in a statement. “It is time to examine recent events to ensure that all New Yorkers receive truly equal protection under the law. I look forward to working with Attorney General [Letitia] James and her outstanding team on these important issues.”

Amid the protests during the past two weeks, some NYPD officers have been run over by cars, shot, and stabbed; others have drawn scrutiny for actions that were widely broadcast and, in some cases, heavily edited on social media. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio at one point called for an officer to be fired when a short video showed him brandishing a gun at protesters; a full video then emerged showing the officer's supervisor had just been hit by a brick.

Separately, the mayor initially defended other officers filmed driving through protesters who were attacking their police vehicles before calling for an investigation. And an NYPD officer has been charged with assault for pushing a woman to the ground, although more details of the episode remained unclear.

Another Brewing Scandal: Saudi Arms Sales, the Ghost of a Reporter, and America’s Oil War in Yemen

The brutal killing of George Floyd by police, followed by the president’s calls for military intervention against protestors, are causing words like “dictatorship,” “authoritarianism,” and even “fascism” to become part of the national discourse. But the president has been dismantling constitutional safeguards for a long time, and the racism he and his administration have broadcast across the nation extends around the world, too.

In Iraq, where civilian populations have long suffered under the heel of American militarism, protesters applauded the demonstrations in American cities. In Yemen, now in its fifth year of a US-armed Saudi war that has decimated civilian populations, its desperately poor people are bracing for an onslaught of covid-19 due to cuts in UN assistance by Gulf countries allied with the US. But while this tragedy is going largely unnoticed, some key American lawmakers are trying to hold the Trump Administration — and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in particular —accountable for mishandling the war in Yemen through illicit arms sales to Saudi Arabia.

A Congressional hearing on June 3rd focused on the abrupt firing last month of the man looking into the arms sales, the Inspector General charged with oversight of the State Department, including the secretary of state.

Texas: CBP Seizes Nearly $1 Million In Cocaine From Smugglers

Border Patrol agents seized nearly $1 million worth of cocaine on June 6, according to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection press release. The interception occurred at the Gateway International Bridge in Brownsville, Texas.

“Our frontline CBP officers at the Port of Brownsville yet again affirmed their resolve to advance CBP’s border security mission and that commitment is reflected in this significant cocaine interception in the passenger vehicle environment,” said Port Director Tater Ortiz, Brownsville Port of Entry.

The smuggler attempted to bring the narcotics into the U.S. in their vehicle. Agents alerted to the vehicle discovered the 24 packages weighing 122 pounds. The drugs are estimated to have a $940,000 street value.

Accused looter charged with attempted murder for allegedly running over Philly cop

Officer Tony Nieves was reportedly 'crushed from the waist up'

A woman linked to multiple crimes during violent riots in Philadelphia last month has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly running over a police officer and leaving him "crushed from the waist up" as she fled the scene of a burglary.

What are the details?

Authorities say Angela Hall, 41, served as a getaway driver in the looting of a beauty supply store on May 30. According to the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office, Hall ran over Philadelphia police officer Tony Nieves when he responded to the scene as she fled, "causing severe bodily injury" to the bicycle patrol officer.

But prosecutors say Hall's criminal activity did not end with her running over Nieves. She is also accused of falsely reporting as stolen the rental car she was driving when she allegedly hit the police officer.

WPVIT-TV reported that Nieves was left with 12 broken ribs, a shattered sternum, and five fractured vertebrae from the attack.

Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 President John McNesby told the outlet of Nieves, "He's in very bad shape right now at Jefferson Hospital. He's basically crushed from the waist up." McNesby added, "He's going to have a long recovery and he's going to need a lot of people to rally around him. A lot of prayers, right now."

Hall has been charged with burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary, attempted murder, obstruction of justice, false reports to law enforcement authorities and several other charges.

District Attorney Larry Kasner said in a statement,

This individual's criminal actions are egregious and resulted in serious, possibly permanent injuries to a police officer who was responding to a situation that was already dangerous. My thoughts are with this officer and his loved ones at this time: I hope your recovery will be speedy and complete.

This office intends to hold Angela Hall accountable for the severe harm she has caused Officer Nieves.
