N.Korea tells US to mind its own business
North Korea has warned the United States not to interfere in inter-Korean affairs after Washington expressed dissatisfaction over Pyongyang's severance of all communication lines with South Korea.
North Korea cut off communication with the South on Tuesday after defectors in the South sent leaflets criticizing North Korean leader Kim Jong Un across the border. The US State Department promptly expressed disappointment with Pyongyang's decision.
Kwon Jong Gun, director general for US affairs at North Korea's foreign ministry, issued a statement on Thursday saying he's been appalled by such thoughtless remarks. He said no one has the right to meddle in inter-Korean affairs which are an internal matter of the Korean people. Kwon added the US should keep its mouth shut and focus on putting its own house in order if it does not want to face terrible consequences.
He said that would be beneficial for a successful US presidential election ahead. Kwon also slammed the US and South Korea, saying they have repeated betrayal and provocation over the past two years. Friday marks the second anniversary of the first-ever US-North Korea summit.
Observers say North Korea may be trying to raise tensions to draw concessions from US President Donald Trump, who is seeking reelection in November.
