Why be surprised? He's a Hollywood actor, and a liberal. There's no such thing as a nice liberal these days. They're all suspect or compromised somehow. At best, he's a useful idiot.
What you don't see as a possibility is the power of the media. In this case, the EBS. Complete take over of media, to explain in very creative, spell-binding fashion, exactly what is going on, what has happened, and why this extraordinary effort. There will be no way to counter anything while media is shut down. The internet? It may or may not continue to operate, and efforts will be made to counter (by who?), but most people will be glued to the TV.
