KEY WEST, FLORIDA — Two Chinese nationals who were students at the University of Michigan will spend time in prison after pleading guilty to illegally entering a restricted military base and taking pictures of naval infrastructure in Florida.

Yuhao Wang, 24, and Jielun Zhang, 25, were sentenced June 5 to 12 months and nine months in prison, respectively, followed by one year of supervised release, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of Florida.

Wang and Zhang were arrested for entering Sigsbee Annex Naval Air Station in Key West, Florida and photographing defense installations on Jan. 4. They drove up to the guard station at the entrance and spoke with a U.S. Navy Security Forces Master At Arms who requested military identification, which they could not provide, according to an affidavit for an arrest warrant made by FBI Special Agent J. Chris Klettheime.

The Master at Arms told the two they were not authorized to enter the base, provided instructions for them to make a U-turn and asked for a driver’s license, Klettheime’s affidavit said.

Zhang provided a license to the Master at Arms, but continued driving onto Sigsbee Annex, prompting the Master at Arms to radio other Navy security forces to locate the vehicle, the affidavit said.
