A church that served the local community for years found its lease canceled this week. Had the pastor been accused of sexually assaulting someone or embezzling funds? Had the church preached a message of true hate or intolerance? No, the city revoked the church’s lease because the pastor had committed the heinous sin of “liking” tweets exposing Democrat hypocrisy. Among others, he had “liked” a tweet daring to criticize His Holiness Barack Obama for golfing when his wife, Michelle, urged members of the black community to stay home to stop the spread of the coronavirus (yes, this happened).
There was simply no other remedy. The Housing Authority of the Birmingham District Board of Commissioners just had to revoke the lease of the Church of the Highlands. It’s not like the pastor had apologized for his heinous sin or preached a sermon condemning racism, or anything. Oh wait, he did both? Well, apparently that’s immaterial.
The Housing Authority terminated its partnership with the Church of the Highlands on Monday, claiming a disagreement with the “views” of Pastor Chris Hodges, AL.com reported. In doing so, the authority severed an agreement dating back to 2017 which allowed the church to provide resident outreach programs and social services at its Campus of Hope in the Marks Village Public Housing community. The Campus of Hope provided mentoring, community support groups, and faith and social service activities that promote volunteerism. Church of the Highlands (COTH) provided these services at nine of the housing authority’s public housing communities

ROME — The content of President Donald Trump’s new executive order to promote religious freedom overseas was greatly overshadowed by the controversy that erupted at the time of its signing June 2 — but Church leaders in the Middle East and Nigeria contacted by the Register have enthusiastically welcomed the document.
The presidential directive, which President Trump signed at the White House after a controversial visit to the St. John Paul II National Shrine in Washington, D.C., prioritizes international religious freedom in foreign policy and overseas government aid projects, budgets $50 million a year for programs that advance religious liberty worldwide, and requires relevant State Department officials to undergo training in international religious freedom.
The executive order also aims to develop recommendations to “prioritize the appropriate use of economic tools” to advance religious liberty “in countries of particular concern.”
Explaining the significance of the executive order, Kristina Arriaga, former vice chairwoman of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, noted that religious freedom “can be a sensitive issue” and so is often “set aside by U.S. diplomats in bilateral and multilateral negotiations.

Highest number of abortions since 1967, "a national tragedy", says SPUC
The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children has described abortion figures for 2019, released today by the Department for Health and Social Care, as “a national tragedy”. 209,519 unborn children were aborted in England and Wales in 2019; the highest number since the Abortion Act came into force in April 1968.

Ban On Sex Offender Attending Church Services Is Upheld
In State of Washington v. Duschene, (WA App., June 8, 2020), a Washington state appellate court upheld the sentence and community custody provisions imposed on a convicted sex offender. Among other things, defendant argued that the condition that prohibits him from entering areas where children's activities regularly occur violates his 1st Amendment free exercise rights because this prohibits him from attending church services. The court disagreed, saying in part:
A burden on the exercise of religion … must withstand strict scrutiny…. Once the complaining party establishes a coercive effect, the burden of proof shifts to the government to show the restrictions serve a compelling state interest and are the least restrictive means for achieving that interest….
The record shows that DuSchene has regularly attended church in the past, and that he considers himself a Christian. But he does not argue that he sincerely holds his religious convictions, that those convictions are central to the practice of his religion, or that the challenged enactment burdens the free exercise of his religion. Thus, he has not established that the condition has a coercive effect, and his challenge on this ground fails.

Changes at Pastebin have security researchers red in the face
An unusual site that’s sometimes frequented by hackers angered researchers by turning off their access to a scraping API.
If you’ve never been to Pastebin, it looks kinda like the internet’s biggest box of programmer Post-It notes.
Founded in 2002, the site was designed for developers who want to save and share raw text.
Typically, that means bits of code, but Pastebin will take pretty much whatever text you feed it. The vast majority of its abc’s and 123’s wouldn’t make you look twice — the Pastebin public archive is chock full of scintillating “untitled” material.
But in darker corners of the web, Pastebin is a destination for hackers and malcontents. They’re known to post lists of passwords pilfered in data breaches, violent manifestos, and other unsavory stuff.
Security researchers try to keep them at bay — by scraping the site using a special API, and paying $50 for the privilege.
But now there’s a fire in the ‘bin
Last week, Motherboard reported that Pastebin turned off access to its scraping API. According to CyberScoop, some Twitter accounts were dedicated to catching and flagging malware on Pastebin before it could do any damage.
By turning off the scraping API, Pastebin pissed off people who fought the good fight against the black hats — and folks who had forked over $50 for lifetime access to the scraping tool. A sampling of the criticism:

Germany: Police raid left-wing extremist scene in Leipzig
Police in the German federal state of Saxony on Wednesday raided the apartments of several left-wing extremists in the Connewitz district of Leipzig.
Tom Bernhardt, the spokesman for the State Criminal Police Office (LKA), said that the sweeps were carried out by “SoKo LinX” of the Police Terrorism and Extremist Defense Center, and were connected to left-wing extremism, Die Welt reports.
In total, police searched nine apartments that were occupied by individuals from the left-wing extremist scene who are suspected of having committed crimes which involved, among other things, violence against people and property. The Connewitz district in Leipzig is widely known as one of Germany’s most notable far-left strongholds, with approximately 250 violent left-wing extremists.
Last winter, following a dramatic uptick in violent attacks committed by left-wing extremists, the eastern German state of Saxony announced the establishment of a Special Commission on left-wing extremism (Soko LinX).
In November of last year, Voice of Europe reported that there had been 305 left-wing attacks recorded, compared to 222 in 2018.
In one of those attacks, which took place in Leipzig in November, Antifa extremists invaded the apartment of a real estate agent and beat her as a part of their so-called war against the development of luxury apartments in Leipzig, as previously reported by Voice of Europe.
Just a month before that, Voice of Europe reported that individuals from the same left-wing extremist scene in Leipzig set two cranes ablaze at a construction site run by the same real-estate development company, causing around ten million euros in damage. The group also burned several excavators at several construction sites in the city during the same month.

US Charges Chinese Researcher Identified as PLA Officer With Visa Fraud
A Chinese researcher and officer in the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Sunday after US agents discovered that the individual “intentionally made false statements about his military service in his visa application.”
Chinese national Xin Wang, who entered the US on March 26, 2019, via a multiple entry J1 non-immigrant visa, has been charged with the crime of visa fraud, according to a recently unsealed criminal complaint filed on Monday in the US District Court for the Northern District of California.
The court filing detailed that Wang obtained his visa on December 17, 2018, after submitting an application that contained false statements about his military service with the PLA.
According to his application for a J1 visa, which is issued to individuals participating in work- and study-based exchange visitor programs, Wang noted he was an employee of the Air Force Military University and was coming to the US to conduct research at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
He also disclosed that he previously served as “Associate Professor in Medicine in the Chinese Army” from September 1, 2002, through September 1, 2016, the filing said.
