Judge bars Seattle police from using tear gas, other chemicals to control crowds

SEATTLE — A U.S. judge on Friday issued a temporary restraining order prohibiting Seattle police officers from using pepper spray, tear gas and flash bang devices as part of their crowd control efforts, handing a victory to Black Lives Matter and other protesters who have taken issue with the use of such devices.

District Court Judge Richard A. Jones issued the written ruling after a local chapter of Black Lives Matter filed suit against the Seattle Police Department to suspend violent tactics it said had been used to break up largely peaceful protests in recent days. In a written statement, the civil rights group said, "That is a victory for today. Black Lives Matter demands a justice system that works for us every day."
