I shop at Walmart as infrequently as possible. I HATE the over the top surveillance, not because I ever pocket anything, but because I hate the spying. Period. I am old enough to like to get to know a few "regular" cashiers in the places I shop. Brief convo on the way out the door. It's friendly and I'd guess a definite deterrent to stealing. You don't rob someone you respect or who you know depends on a little shop and the income from it. Also, the cashiers know the regulars.
I think some people will make a wonderful amount of money bringing back old fashioned shopping. No cameras (but not necessarily no security) friendly, in person service, etc. Go to small town (boarded up) America. Revitalize HOME.
Btw, when all the cashiers lose their jobs, robots do the stocking, cleaning etc. Who will shop at Walmart? ROBOTS.
