Right-wing demonstrators have hit the streets of Britain’s capital, vowing to “protect” historical monuments from anti-racism protesters. The gathering escalated into scuffles with police, as well as with rival protesters.

Following days of unrest involving protests against racism and police brutality, right-wing groups took to the streets of London on Saturday. The protesters condemned Black Lives Matter demonstrators and vowed to protect historical monuments from them.

Multiple monuments, some linked to Britain’s colonial past, have been vandalized in London and elsewhere in recent days. Several statues, including one of Winston Churchill outside Parliament, have been put into protective coverings by the authorities.

China allows American Express to tap into its lucrative market despite rising tensions with US

American Express has become the first foreign company to be allowed to process yuan transactions in China as it received final approval to start operating a bank card clearing network in the country.

China's central bank announced on Saturday that it had granted a clearing licence to American Express's joint venture with LianLian DigiTech, Express (Hangzhou) Technology Services. The company, which won initial approval two years ago, is set to start the clearing services within six months, according to the statement.

The approval means that Chinese retailers will soon be able to accept payments from American Express credit cards, the use of which has been limited to some high-end restaurants and hotels. The New York-based firm will take some market share from China UnionPay, which is currently the only bank card clearance agency in China.

The People's Bank of China (PBOC) stressed that the move reflects China's continued opening up of its financial industry. Foreign companies have long been trying to enter the rapidly growing Chinese market, which had 8.5 billion bank cards in circulation as of last year and where mobile transactions reached 190 trillion yuan ($27 trillion) in 2018, according to Bloomberg. Other card giants – such as Mastercard and Visa – earlier submitted applications for clearance, but have not received similar PBOC approval so far.

Assad fires prime minister as Syria edges closer to becoming a failed state

With Syria’s economy on the verge of collapse, the country’s currency is plunging to record lows. Although Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad has thus far survived the decade-long civil war, his hold on the country now seems more tenuous than ever.

Assad, on Thursday, fired prime minister Imad Khamis, state media reported.

They did not give a reason for the sudden decision to fire Khamis, nonetheless, it is apparent that he was made the scapegoat for the economic crisis. Khamis’s successor as prime minister will be Hussein Arnous, the current water resources minister. Arnous was born in Idlib and has served in a variety of government posts, including as the governor of Deir Zor province that borders Iraq and Quneitra province in southern Syria.

The move to fire Khamis follows weeks of worsening economic conditions and an outbreak of anti-Assad protests in government-held areas.

In Syria’s southern Suwayda province, the Druze community sent a blunt but pointed message to Assad, after three days of protests.

“We promised to keep things peaceful … but if you want bullets, you shall have them.”

Syrian Army strikes jihadist gathering in southern idlib

BEIRUT, LEBANON (4:30 P.M.) – A Syrian Arab Army (SAA) scout unit monitored the movements of a group of jihadists moving towards the front-lines in southern Idlib last night, resulting in a powerful attack by the military.

According to a field report from Idlib, the Syrian Arab Army witnessed around midnight, a number of jihadists from the Hurras Al-Deen group gathering along the front-lines in Al-Bara, as they prepared to launch a new attack on the military’s positions in the Jabal Al-Zawiya region.

However, before they could launch this attack, the Syrian Arab Army unleashed a heavy attack on the jihadists, killing and wounding several of these militants.

The report said the jihadists quickly dispersed after this attack and were forced to abandon their planned raid on the Syrian Arab Army’s positions near the town of Kafr Nabl.

A source said recently that the Syrian Army units operating on the axes of Sahl Al-Ghab and the Idlib countryside are in full readiness in anticipation of any emergency that these fronts may witness.

US Attorney probing some incidents tied to Atlanta riots

Authorities are examining if federal charges are appropriate in fewer than a dozen incidences of property damage and violence against police officers that occurred amid Atlanta’s protests of police brutality and racial injustice following George Floyd’s death, U.S. Attorney Byung J. “BJay” Pak said Tuesday.

The FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office are examining individuals who might have traveled across state lines to incite a riot, which is a federal crime, Pak said. Pak told reporters during a livestreamed Atlanta Press Club event that his office is acting in a support role to local law enforcement.

The matters under investigation by federal authorities mostly relate to arson, including the torching of police vehicles, which occurred May 29 in the first night of demonstrations in downtown Atlanta. Demonstrations that night started peacefully but devolved into vandalism and looting in downtown and Buckhead.

Similar violent outbursts across the country prompted U.S. Attorney General William Barr to direct federal law enforcement agencies to apprehend and charge “violent criminal agitators who have taken over peaceful protests.”

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms instituted a curfew that lasted for seven nights, and Gov. Brian Kemp mobilized the National Guard.

Ohio House OKs bill to scrap penalties for drivers who don’t disclose concealed guns during traffic stops

Motorists who don’t tell law enforcement about concealed handguns they have in their vehicle would no longer face any penalty, under legislation passed by the Ohio House 58-32 late Thursday night.

House Bill 425, which now goes to the Ohio Senate, is one of a number of bills introduced by House Republicans to relax the state’s gun laws.

Right now, people who fail to notify an officer in Ohio that they have a gun with them face a first-degree misdemeanor, punishable by up to six months in jail, a $1,000 fine, and suspension of their concealed-handgun license. HB 425 would eliminate that penalty

The bill would also change the state’s current requirement that drivers must “promptly” notify an officer if they have a gun with them.

Even if the bill passes, drivers with guns would still be required to keep their hands in plain sight during traffic stops and can’t lie if an officer asks if they have a gun in the vehicle, among other rules.

George Floyd rookie cop used crowdfunding to pay $750K bail

The fired rookie cop who bailed out of jail on serious charges over George Floyd’s death managed to raise his $750,000 bond with the help of donations to a crowdfunding site, according to a report.

Thomas Lane, 37, posted cash bail Wednesday thanks in part to those who responded to an appeal decrying how high the bail was set, the Star Tribune said.

“Lane and his family appreciate your support and prayers during this time,” said the site, which was taken down once he was bailed out, the paper noted.

Lane’s attorney, Earl Gray, confirmed to the paper that it had been a legitimate fundraiser. However, he did not reveal exactly how much of the money came from collections, or who was behind it.
