When I was in the military, Color Guard duty rotated through the unit. A lot of guys hated it. I never did. I considered it an honor to take the flag down and fold her up at night. Truth be known, I used to stand in for a lot of fellas in exchange for a boot polishing. oh, boy…

It was about State rights with the subtext that the question of the legality of slavery was not laid out in the Constitution and thus was reserved to the States.
