Amazon’s facial recognition “moratorium” is a public relations stunt. Lawmakers should ban this dangerous surveillance tech.

Amazon just announced that they will place a one year moratorium on selling their invasive, racially biased facial recognition surveillance software to police. The announcement comes on the heels of one from IBM, who announced plans to get out of the facial recognition business entirely, and questioned whether artificial intelligence powered surveillance should be allowed at all.

Digital rights group Fight for the Future, who have led a coalition of dozens of organizations calling for an outright ban on facial recognition surveillance, issued the following statement, which can be attributed to Deputy Director Evan Greer (she/her):

“This is nothing more than a public relations stunt from Amazon. But it’s also a sign that facial recognition is increasingly politically toxic, which is a result of the incredible organizing happening on the ground right now.

Amazon knows that facial recognition software is dangerous. They know it’s the perfect tool for tyranny. They know it’s racist––and that in the hands of police it will simply exacerbate systemic discrimination in our criminal justice system.

Details of a Deadly Pathogen Shipment to Wuhan Lab From Canada Unveiled by Media

While Canadian officials reportedly explained that the shipments of the Ebola and Henipeh viruses to China were not related to the coronavirus outbreak, one epidemiologist described the development as "alarming".

A shipment of Ebola and Henipah viruses was sent from the National Microbiology Lab Winnipeg, Canada to the Wuhan Institute of Virology early in 2019, way before the global coronavirus crisis erupted, CBC News reports.

The media outlet also noted that "one of the scientists escorted from the lab in Winnipeg amid an RCMP investigation last July" was apparently responsible for exporting the pathogens, adding that Dr. Xiangguo Qiu, her husband Keding Cheng and her students from China got removed from Canada's “only level-4 lab” over a possible "security breach".

Canadian officials insisted that the shipment was not related to the COVID-19 outbreak or the research related to the pandemic.

"The administrative investigation is not related to the shipment of virus samples to China," stated Eric Morrissette, chief of media relations for Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada. "In response to a request from the Wuhan Institute of Virology for viral samples of Ebola and Henipah viruses, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) sent samples for the purpose of scientific research in 2019."

However, a law professor and epidemiologist at the University of Ottawa named Amir Attaran, called this development “alarming” and even "potentially life-threatening".

Stelter complained about the term “fake news” and then got personal when he told Ellis that she would regret using “slurs” when her kids and grandkids see this one day.

She shot back:

He Teaches Social Studies: Suspect Who Vandalized Columbus Statue in Rhode Island is Elementary Teacher

A social studies teacher in Rhode Island vandalized a Christopher Columbus statue last weekend.

Officers watched Derrick Garforth throw paint on the boarded up monument.

Leftists believe Columbus is evil for discovering the New World in 1492.

It makes you wonder what the angry felon was teaching the kids at school.

One of the suspects involved in vandalism at the Christopher Columbus statue in Elmwood Avenue is a teacher at Pawtucket Public Schools who is now out on leave pending an investigation, according to the superintendent.

Derrick Garforth, 34, was charged with desecration of grave/monument, which is a felony.

Superintendent of the Pawtucket School Department, Dr. Cheryl McWilliams, told ABC6 News, “I have just learned about this and the School Department is investigating it.”

Around 1:30 a.m., on Saturday morning detectives noticed a man and woman getting out of a car and running across Elmwood Avenue towards Columbus square. The two began to splatter paint on the boarded up monument, according to police.

A Russian billionaire with an eye for high-end developments in major cities just dropped $63 million to snap up Fort Lauderdale properties near the Broward courthouse and school district headquarters.

The OKO Group, by Chairman and CEO Vladislav Doronin, last week finished the purchase of 6.7 acres between Southeast Sixth and Seventh streets, bound by Federal Highway to the east, Southeast Fourth Avenue to the west.

The property is now home to a slew of small business and attorneys’ offices, a satellite of the Broward Public Defender’s Office, insurance agencies and parking lots.

Last year a different developer won approval for a 34-story luxury apartment building for seniors on part of the same property.
