American Islamists Again Embrace Erdogan's Authoritarianism
Leaders of American Islamist groups celebrated Eid al-Fitr, the end of Ramadan, this week by heaping praise on Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the president of Turkey who aims to be a leader of the Sunni world.
"[P]rofound human rights violations against hundreds of thousands of people" in Turkey were identified in 2018 by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, "from arbitrary deprivation of the right to work and to freedom of movement, to torture and other ill-treatment, arbitrary detentions and infringements of the rights to freedom of association and expression."
"Over 100,000 websites were reportedly blocked" during the previous year, it found, and hundreds of journalists were arrested. Roughly 100 pregnant women and new mothers were detained because their husbands allegedly had terrorism connections.
"Some were detained with their children and others violently separated from them," said High Commissioner Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein. "This is simply outrageous, utterly cruel, and surely cannot have anything whatsoever to do with making the country safer."
But to the American Islamists who met online Sunday afternoon, Erdogan is a beacon of goodness.

American Islamists' Hypocrisy on Religious Persecution
When India is accused of enacting discriminatory or threatening policies toward its Muslim minority, American Islamists are quick to protest. News conferences and social media campaigns cast an image of a looming genocide.
When religious and ethnic minorities in Muslim-majority Pakistan actually are persecuted or harmed, however, that same concern for religious liberty fails to materialize.
For example, the U.S. Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO), a Washington, D.C.-based Islamist umbrella group, issued a news release earlier this month excoriating India's ruling nationalist Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) for a December citizenship law that the USCMO claims led to the killing of Muslims in communal riots in New Delhi.
The law passed with "the express purpose of revoking the citizenship rights of millions of indigenous Indian Muslims," the USCMO press release claimed. India insists this is not true.

Quick negotiations required for ceasefire, time for Libyans to act to stop Russian and other interference: U.S. Secretary of State Pompeo on Libya
As both the warring Libyan sides pour over every reported phone call and every reported utterance by the international community for signs of support, U.S. Secretary of State Pompeo yesterday urged a quick ceasefire that would lead to political talks. He warned against continued foreign interference.
Pompeo said “The agreement between the GNA and the LNA to re-enter UN security talks was a good first step, very positive. Quick and good faith negotiations are now required to implement a ceasefire and relaunch the UN-led intra-Libyan political talks.
It’s time. It’s time for all Libyans on all sides to act, so that neither Russia nor any other country can interfere in Libya’s sovereignty for its own gain’’.
Putting Libya on the path to economic recovery means preserving Libyan oil facilities and strong access to the National Oil Corporation”, concluded Pompeo.
In a similar vein, the U.S. Embassy said yesterday that the U.S. is concerned for the continued escalation in Sirte. It said that it shares the immediate concerns about yet another humanitarian crisis in Libya – this time in Sirte.

CAPITAL HILL AUTONOMOUS ZONE (CHAZ) — Flag-bearing Americans caused an uproar within Seattle’s “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone” (CHAZ) as they tried to enter the area to protest Saturday afternoon, according to Daily Caller reporters on the ground.
Katie Daviscourt and a man who asked to be referred to as Maximus X arrived at the outskirts of CHAZ, the area that has been taken over by protesters and deemed a cop-free zone, with two giant American flags Saturday. The duo was accused by some of being white supremacists and members of the right-wing organization Proud Boys, but they both said they were simply there to show support for America and peacefully protest.
“We’re standing up for our freedoms as Americans. This is America, this is not CHAZ,” Daviscourt, the Washington/Oregon representative for Turning Point USA, told people as they marched around the perimeter of the commune.

18 dead, 189 injured as tanker explodes on Chinese highway
Beijing - A tanker truck exploded on a highway in southeastern China on Saturday, killing 18 people and injuring at least 189 others, authorities said.
The explosion caused extensive damage to nearby buildings. One photo showed firefighters hosing down a row of buildings with blown-out facades well into the night.
The truck carrying liquefied gas exploded around 4:45 pm. on the Shenyang-Haikou Expressway south of Shanghai in Zhejiang province, the official Xinhua News Agency said, citing local authorities.
A second explosion followed when the truck fell onto a factory workshop, Xinhua said.
The Wenling city government information office said on its social media account that houses and workshops collapsed and 189 people were treated at six hospitals.
A worker at a nearby restaurant told Xinhua that the blast shattered the windows of her home, but that her mother and brother were unharmed.

China sentences Australian to death for smuggling drugs
Beijing - An Australian national has been sentenced to death in China for drug smuggling, according to the Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court.
Australian Cam Gillespie was arrested with over 7.5 kilograms of methamphetamine in his check-in luggage in 2013 while attempting to board an international flight from Baiyun Airport in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou.
The court also ordered that all of Gillespie's personal property be confiscated.
Australia said on Saturday it was providing consular assistance, although access to prisoners remains difficult due to Covid-19 restriction measures implemented by the Chinese government.
"We are deeply saddened to hear of the verdict made in his case," a spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade told dpa, adding: "Australia opposes the death penalty in all circumstances for all people."
Convicted drug smugglers face long prison sentences or the death penalty in China.
Foreigners previously executed by China for drug charges include a Japanese national in 2014, a Filipina in 2013 and a Briton in 2009.

Huffpo Wants to 'Cancel' Black Celebs Who Speak Out Against Riots and Destruction
Cancel Culture has ratcheted into high gear in the wake of the George Floyd riots, with a soccer player getting fired for his wife’s tweet, a church losing its lease over a pastor “liking” supposedly insensitive tweets, and New York Times op-ed editor James Bennet stepping down amid outrage that he published an op-ed by a U.S. senator. Huffpost’s Taryn Finley apparently wants to redirect Cancel Culture — against black celebrities who refuse to toe the line on the left’s race narrative.
Her headline: “Yes, Silence Can Be Violence — But These Celebs Should Shut Up,” with a picture of — you guessed it — black celebrities. “Too many Black stars have made comments condemning the movement for Black lives. It may be time to leave some of your faves behind.”
Taryn Finley suggests that every time a black celebrity “outs themselves as strong and wrong about the Black Lives Matter movement,” she wants them to “go.” Just in case it wasn’t clear what she meant, she included a tweet about canceling celebrities.
Finley warned that some black “celebrities and influencers have said some incredibly weird sh*t.” Naturally, she criticized “non-Black celebs” as well, but she said, “it’s especially hurtful hearing Black stars say these things during such a critical time.”
