By publishing his open letter, Gen Mattis attempted to undermine the chain of command. That is something that is NOT done. It's very dangerous stuff and one of the worst violations by any general in US history. As such, It must be dealt with head on by more than a couple tweets saying he was a bad general. Mattis should be called back to active, publicly reprimanded by POTUS, given an article 32 and face the consequences.
