I am beginning to discover that all pharmaceuticals have side effects which quite often are worse than the condition the condition they are supposed to alleviate. A friend had been taking Lansoprazole for chronic heartburn for years. He recently decided to come off it after reading about some horrible side effects and started using standard indigestion tablets instead. One of the unforseen consequences of coming off Lansoprazole was that he now sleeps much better. Instead of waking several times in the night and being unable to get baaCKE TO SLEEP, HE NOW SLEEPS THROUGH THE NIGHT. Seems odd that a drug prescribed for heartburn could affect sleep patterns but that's what appears to be the case.
As for anxiety, it's root is fear, and one of the greatest fears that any human experiences is the fear of death. One can trace back a lot of anxiety to the fear of death.
I found the following Bible verse really helpful in combating anxiety.
Hebrews 2:14,15
"14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he (Jesus) also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
15 And deliver them WHO THROUGH FEAR OF DEATH WERE ALL THEIR LIFETIME SUBJECT TO BONDAGE"
(Caps added by me).
Anxiety is an aspect of the bondage we are subjected to through fear of death. Once we trust Jesus for eternal life (John 3:16) we are delivered from the fear of death and the anxiety that comes with it.
