Video shows moment when police find money hidden in the home of a former deputy secretary of health investigated in operation

The assistant secretary was exonerated on Wednesday (17), after the outbreak of the Federal Police operation that sought to investigate suspected fraud in the purchase of pulmonary respirators.

A video released shows the moment when police found money hidden inside the house of the now former deputy health secretary of Pará, Peter Cassol. The then assistant secretary of administrative management of Pará Health was exonerated this Wednesday (17), after the outbreak of the Federal Police operation that sought to investigate suspected fraud in the purchase of pulmonary respirators by the state to combat the new coronavirus.

R $ 750,000 were seized at the home of Peter Cassol, one of the targets of search and seizure warrants. According to the video, part of the money was hidden in a gap in the roof of the house.

The warrant was issued by the Superior Court of Justice (STJ) based on a request from the Attorney General's Office (PGR). The state governor, Helder Barbalho (MDB) and the president of the National Council of Health Secretaries (Conass), Alberto Beltrame, were also targets of search warrants.

In the operation, 23 search and seizure warrants were carried out in Pará and six other states. Partners of the investigated company and state civil servants are also among the targets. R $ 25.2 million were also blocked from the governor and seven other investigated. The amount refers to what was spent on the purchase of respirators that ended up not being used. The crimes under investigation are bid rigging, documentary and ideological falsehood, active corruption, malfeasance and money laundering.

The government of Pará even tried to withdraw the investigation of the fraud from the Federal Police. Shortly after the start of an operation that arrested businessmen last month, the State Government sent an appeal to the Federal Court requesting that the entire case be transferred to the Civil Police of Pará. The claim was that the local government had purchased the equipment with funds own. At first, the Federal Court granted an injunction in favor of the local government, but the decision was revised, and the case continued under the care of the PF.

On social media, the governor stated that he is "calm and available for any clarification that may be necessary" and that he acted in time to "avoid damage to the public purse, since the funds were returned to the state coffers".

He also stated that he ordered the payment of other equipment to be investigated by the investigated company and that the government went to court seeking compensation for collective moral damages against suppliers. Finally, the governor points out that he is not a friend of the businessman and that he did not know that the respirators would not work.
