44 COVID-19 Deaths Reported at New Hope’s North Ridge Nursing Home

1:22 PM | Friday, May 8, 2020

Another 27 residents at North Ridge have recovered from COVID-19, including six in the last two days, said a North Ridge official.

New numbers from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), show 508 people have died from COVID-19. Of those deaths, 407 are from people who lived in nursing homes or assisted-living facilities.

North Ridge is a 320-bed nursing home, the largest long-term care facility in the state. According to MDH’s Office of Health Facility Complaints, there are five substantiated complaints against North Ridge since January 2016. The complaints include neglect of care, neglect of supervision and medication errors.

The North Ridge facility first opened in 1966 and now includes senior apartments and assisted living, in addition to skilled nursing care. It employs nearly 600 people.

Walz Criticized For Letting Hospitals Discharge Recovering COVID-19 Patients Back to Nursing Homes

Lakeland News — May. 27 2020

Gov. Tim Walz has been criticized for allowing hospitals to discharge patients recovering from COVID-19 back into nursing homes. New York and California currently have stopped allowing that to happen.

At least 27 of Wednesday’s 33 deaths occurred in long-term care facilities. There have been 932 deaths from the pandemic in Minnesota, including 759 among residents of nursing homes or assisted living facilities. That’s 81% of all deaths and the highest percentage in the nation.

Health officials also said Wednesday that 598 people were hospitalized as of Wednesday, up 28 from Tuesday, with 260 in intensive care, a new one-day high up two from Tuesday.

'Draconian'? 'House arrest'? Coronavirus lockdowns prompt raft of lawsuits against states

Other cases are pending. In Minnesota, churches joined nonessential businesses in suing to block Gov. Tim Walz's orders. Walz created "a draconian shutdown that picks winners and losers, with devastating effects," the lawsuit said.

“Worshippers across Minnesota have been prohibited from assembling to celebrate Easter and the Passover, while liquor stores have remained open,” said the lawsuit from Northland Baptist Church, Living Word Christian Center, Glow in One Mini Golf and Myron’s Cards and Gifts. “Target, Walmart, Walgreens and CVS are open, while local Hallmark stores are closed. Golf courses and bait shops are open, but indoor amusement facilities are shut.”

Walz spokesman Teddy Tschann said the governor’s actions were grounded in the need to protect the health and safety of Minnesotans.

U.S. District Judge Wilhelmina Wright scheduled a hearing in the case for Tuesday.
