Appellate court rejects citizens' damage suit against ousted ex-president
An appellate court on Thursday turned down a damage suit filed against former President Park Geun-hye by thousands of ordinary citizens who argued that they suffered mental distress from the power abuse and corruption scandal centering on the former leader.
Upholding the lower court's initial rejection of the suit in May last year, the Seoul High Court again dismissed the case filed by around 4,400 citizens.
The suit was filed in January 2017, a month after the National Assembly passed a motion to impeach Park, who faced accusations of corruption and abuse of power. Park was finally ousted from presidency in March 2017.
Park is now serving a combined 32-year prison term that includes 25 years for abuse of power and corruption and five years for illegally accepting off-the-book funds from the chiefs of the National Intelligence Service.
Another two years stem from her conviction linked with illegal meddling in a party nomination process ahead of the 2016 general elections.
Park's corruption sentence is currently under retrial at an appellate court after the top court ordered a review of the case last August.

Indeed, Amsterdam has two sides,” he admitted. “What the world sees is mostly the negative side of prostitution, sex and drugs. The dark side.” But there are also “many good people living there, who are open towards others.”
“Amsterdam has the highest numbers of Mass attendance. Nowhere in the Netherlands are there so many diaconal initiatives for the poor and homeless. Nowhere in the country are there so many conversions. The number of people going to confession is the highest in the country. Of course, all of this also has to do with the international character of the city,” Punt said.
And there is that great event, still deeply rooted in the history of the capital: The Eucharistic Miracle of March 15, 1345, which turned Amsterdam into a place of pilgrimage
Once the COVID-19 pandemic is over, something else will be added: The Perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Literally a Gebed zonder end – a prayer without end – as an alley in the city center is called.

everal left-wing Israeli NGOs signed a letter comparing the upcoming Israeli annexation of the Jordan Valley and parts of Judea and Samaria to the Anschluss, the 1938 annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany.
The letter was sent to German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, who visited Jerusalem last week, asking him to intervene and stop the annexation process, reported Israel Hayom.
Combatants for Peace, Yesh Gvul, Gush Shalom (Peace Bloc), and Mesavarot (“Refusers”) were among the organizations that signed the letter.
Some of these organizations, while based in Israel, receive funding from foreign bodies. Combatants for Peace, according to watchdog group NGO Monitor, reportedly received 71,798 shekels in donations from the AGEH charity arm of the German Catholic Church in 2018.
Combatants for Peace also received a donation of 42,343 shekels in 2018 from the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, which is affiliated with left-wing German political party Die Linke.
An investigation by Israeli hasbara (public diplomacy) nonprofit Ad Kan revealed the full text of the letter and its comparisons between Nazi Germany and modern-day Israel.
“The use of the Holocaust by extreme leftist organizations to please their German patrons is a lowly act of organizations that have already crossed all possible limits of decency,” said Ad Kan in a statement.

azakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, who continues to control the Central Asian country after his sudden resignation last year, has tested positive for the coronavirus. Nazarbayev's press service said on June 18 that the former president was currently self-isolated and continued to work remotely, Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported.
The 79-year-old Nazarbayev announced his resignation in March 2019 after ruling the oil-rich former Soviet republic for almost 30 years. But he continues to lead the ruling Nur-Otan party and the country's powerful Security Council. He also enjoys the broad benefits of the title of "elbasy" – the leader of the nation. Nazarbayev's opponents say he de facto continues to run the country of 18 million by supervising the actions of incumbent President Qasym-Zhomart Toqaev.

A former U.S. defense official told VOA that last week's flight by a U.S. Navy aircraft showed that the U.S. does not consider Taiwan to be part of Chinese territory.
On June 9, a U.S. Navy Boeing C-40a Clipper was detected flying directly over northern and western Taiwan by aircraft spotting sites. The flight was unusual because it was the first time a U.S. military aircraft had been spotted over Taiwan since two Marine F-18s landed at Tainan Air Force Base for repairs in 2015.
In an interview with VOA, the former U.S. Defense Department official responsible for China’s affairs, Joseph Bosco, said that the U.S. has long considered Taiwan one of its "strategic and security partners." He said the fact that an American military aircraft had flown directly over Taiwan sends a clear signal that the two countries have a close relationship and that neither will be intimidated by China's military provocations.
Bosco observed that China's argument is that Taiwan is part of Chinese territory. Therefore, based on this reasoning, the U.S. must obtain China's approval to fly over the island.
However, Bosco said that the U.S. “of course rejects" this argument. He reasoned that from the U.S. point of view, Taiwan’s status has not yet been decided.
He further stated that its status must be decided peacefully "with the consent of the people of Taiwan." Bosco concluded that what is known is that Taiwan "is definitely not part of China, and is basically a de facto independent country.”
"Because we think it's Taiwan's territory now," Bosco said, the United States naturally applied for permission to enter Taiwanese airspace.

The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo is seeking public input on the decommissioning of the Hōkū Keʻa telescope on the summit of Maunakea. The feedback will be used to develop a draft Environmental Assessment (EA) and a Site Decommissioning Plan (SDP) required by the Maunakea Comprehensive Management Plan (PDF) for UH-managed lands. Decommissioning includes the deconstruction and removal of the telescope facility and the restoration of the site. The draft EA process requires that the public consider alternatives, a total of four in this case:
No Action, or abandon in place
Removal of all buildings and abandon in place foundations and utilities below existing grade
Removal of all buildings and foundations, partial removal of utilities
Complete removal of all buildings, foundations, and utilities

Marauding hippos are terrorising residents in Kimorori Wempa ward in Maragua, after several check dams in the area got filled up following months of heavy rains.
Area MCA Amos Murigi said hundreds of the residents are held hostage in their homes as the animals were straying in the farms destroying their crops and posing a danger to those venturing near the dams.
Speaking at the Murang’a County assembly while seeking answers on how the animals will be secured, Murigi said it was unfortunate that since November last year the residents have not known peace and have not receive any response from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).
“Last year a man was fatally attacked by a hippo that had strayed in his farm. There is also wanton destruction of crops and soon residents will be in dire need of relief food from the government,” Murigi added.
