What is a Spell?

Spellian - The native word in Old English "to tell, speak, discourse, talk,"
-from Proto-Germanic spellam (source also of Old High German spellon "to tell," Old Norse spjalla, Gothic spillon "to talk, tell"), from PIE spel- (2) "to say aloud, recite."
-meaning "set of words with supposed magical or occult powers, incantation, charm" first recorded 1570s.
In English we use the German word Spiel, as in to sell a lengthy story. A spielmann was a story man, or traveling minstrel who performed epic narratives. Spiel in modern German means 'game', spielen 'to play'.
