Shallow earthquakes are between 0 and 70 km deep; intermediate earthquakes, 70 - 300 km deep; and deep earthquakes, 300 - 700 km deep.

just looking at maps now and NZ coast is closer than tonga or either islands

will be a while before it hits, but looked at the time for NZ and its middle of the night for them, might still be asleep when it hits
