Australia is being hit with a massive cyber attack by a sophisticated foreign “state-based” hacker, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced.

In an urgent press conference called this morning in Canberra, Mr Morrison said the ongoing, "large-scale" hack was being executed by a “sophisticated, state-based cyber actor”.

“This activity is targeting Australian organisations across a range of sectors, including all levels of government, industry, political organisations, education, health, essential service providers and operators of other critical infrastructure,” Mr Morrison told reporters.

“We know it is a sophisticated, state-based cyber actor because of the scale and nature of the targeting and the tradecraft used. Regrettably, this activity is not new. Frequency has been increasing.”

Mr Morrison said the Australian Cyber Security Centre has been “actively working with targeted organisations to ensure that they have appropriate technical mitigations in place and their defences are appropriately raised”.

Asked which nation was suspected to be behind the attack, Mr Morrison said the “threshold for public attribution on a technical level is extremely high” and that Australia “doesn't engage lightly in public attributions”.

“When and if we choose to do so is always done in the context of what we believe to be in our strategic national interests,” he said.

“What I can confirm is there are not a large number of state-based actors that can engage in this type of activity and it is clear, based on the advice that we have received, that this has been done by a state-based actor, with very significant capabilities.”

Mr Morrison would not be drawn on whether China was behind the attack. “I can only say what I have said,” he said.

“The Australian Government is not making any public attribution about these matters. We are very confident that this is the actions of a state-based actor. We have not gone any further than that. I can't control what speculation others might engage in on this issue or, frankly, any other. I have simply laid out the facts as we know them and as we have disclosed today.”

Massive Spying Operation Targeting Millions Of Google Chrome Users Tied to Israeli Firm

A massive spying operation deemed "the most far-reaching malicious Chrome store campaign to date" targeting millions of Google Chrome users has been linked to an Israeli firm, according to a report from researchers at Awake Security.

A newly discovered spyware effort attacked users through 32 million downloads of extensions to Google's market-leading Chrome web browser, researchers at Awake Security told Reuters, highlighting the tech industry's failure to protect browsers as they are used more for email, payroll and other sensitive functions.

Alphabet Inc’s (GOOGL.O) Google said it removed more than 70 of the malicious add-ons from its official Chrome Web Store after being alerted by the researchers last month.

"When we are alerted of extensions in the Web Store that violate our policies, we take action and use those incidents as training material to improve our automated and manual analyses," Google spokesman Scott Westover told Reuters.

Most of the free extensions purported to warn users about questionable websites or convert files from one format to another. Instead, they siphoned off browsing history and data that provided credentials for access to internal business tools.

Based on the number of downloads, it was the most far-reaching malicious Chrome store campaign to date, according to Awake co-founder and chief scientist Gary Golomb.

[…] All of the domains in question, more than 15,000 linked to each other in total, were purchased from a small registrar in Israel, Galcomm, known formally as CommuniGal Communication Ltd.

Awake said Galcomm should have known what was happening.

In an email exchange, Galcomm owner Moshe Fogel told Reuters that his company had done nothing wrong.

"Galcomm is not involved, and not in complicity with any malicious activity whatsoever,"Fogel wrote. "You can say exactly the opposite, we cooperate with law enforcement and security bodies to prevent as much as we can."

Clearly this is on the minds of some senior Chinese officials. Guo Shuqing, chairman of the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission, delivered a strong warning on the U.S. currency this week.

He made four points in a speech at the Lujiazhui Forum in Shanghai:

A. The Fed is the de facto central bank of the world. When its policy targets its own economy without considering the spillover effect, the Fed is “very likely to overdraft the credit of the dollar and the U.S.”

B. The pandemic may persist for a long period of time, and countries keep throwing money at the problem with a diminished impact. “It is recommended that you think twice and reserve some policy space for the future.”

C. There is no free lunch. Watch out for inflation.

D. Financial markets are disconnected from the real economy, and such distortions are “unprecedented.” It’s going to be “really painful,” when the policy withdrawal starts.

“Some people say: ‘Domestic debt is not debt, but external debt is debt. For the United States, even external debt is not debt. This seems to have been the case for quite some time in the past, but can it really last for a long time in the future?”

What will China do?

China cherishes the conventional monetary and fiscal policies very much. We will not engage in flooding the system, nor will we engage in deficit monetization and negative interest rates.”

It’s not the first time China vented frustration against the “exorbitant privilege” of the dollar. After the financial crisis, then-PBOC Governor Zhou Xiaochuan proposed using the SDR to replace the dollar as the main reserve currency.

It went nowhere. But this time, China seems to be determined to enhance its reserve-currency status by avoiding unconventional policies. It won’t dislodge the dollar tomorrow, but its attractiveness is clear in the foreign flows to its bond market.

After Retroactively Taking Away Overtime Pay, Garcetti Enlists LAPD for Reimagined Vision of Public Safety

Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti is attempting to make peace with members of the Los Angeles Police Department after maligning them as “killers” and retroactively taking away their overtime pay following several days of Black Lives Matter protests and riots.

The Democrat mayor, who has also proposed to defund the LAPD by as much as $150 million, sent a letter to all police personnel on Thursday praising them for their “tireless work and commitment” while also inviting them to participate in a “reimagined and strengthened vision of public safety.”

Garcetti wrote in the letter:

This has been an incredibly difficult time for our city. I know that you are exhausted by the long hours, the many shifts, the time away from your families, and all the sacrifices you made during such a challenging moment for our cities and our communities.

Garcetti said that he wants police officers to take part in his new vision for public safety that he hopes will help to eradicate “the brutal sting of racism in our country.”

NYPD Planning 'Strike' on July 4 to Give People Their 'Independence From Police'

Flyers are circulating among New York City police officers calling for a “strike” on July 4 in order to give people a taste of what a world without police would be like.

This follows comments from Governor Andrew Cuomo on NPR on Monday where he said if people don’t want the police force, “they shouldn’t have it.”

It looks like at least some NYPD officers want to take the governor at his word.

A pair of flyers making their rounds among NYPD officers are encouraging them to call out sick July 4th — as retribution for police reform and a perceived anti-cop climate following the outrage over high-profile police killings of unarmed black men across the country, multiple cops told The Post.

One message calls for the strike to kick off at 3 p.m. July 4.

“NYPD cops will strike on July 4th to let the city have their independence without cops,” [reads] the message, which is being passed among cops via text, according to sources.

So far, the move to strike doesn’t appear to be catching fire with most cops, but who knows? It’s more than two weeks until July 4. That’s an eternity for rioters. And given that every single police shooting of a black man across the country is now under the microscope, it won’t take much to set the mob off again.

This particular effort to organize a strike isn’t the only one.

Another message seen by police officers reads #Bluflu and instructs cops to call out sick on Independence Day.

“Police officers like you and me took an oath to protect strangers regardless of race, class or gender,” the message reads. “Today we are vilified and must stand as one.”

It then gives instructions for a sickout, telling members to call their precinct and request a sick day. If they are denied, the message instructs them to call the main NYPD sick desk.

If that doesn’t work, officers are instructed to report for duty — then ask for an ambulance so they can go home sick.

“If you are held because of the #Bluflu, request a bus and go sick from command,” the flyer reads.

A “sick out” in the middle of the day, asking for ambulances and buses to go home would create a chaotic situation — exactly what would happen if the police weren’t there.

Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch said that New York cops have “reached the breaking point.”

“Over the past few weeks, we have been attacked in the streets, demonized in the media and denigrated by practically every politician in this city,” Lynch said.

“Now we are facing the possibility of being arrested any time we go out to do our job.”

The chances of effective labor action from the NYPD are pretty small. Good cops, even if they agree with the sentiment behind the proposed action, will show up and go about doing their duty as they always will. The best cops feel a personal responsibility for citizens’ safety and take the insults and threats in stride.

But don’t be surprised if some kind of symbolic action is taken to show the widespread disapproval of the city’s not supporting them.

UNITED KINGDOM, June 18, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) — A U.K. school has apologized after parents complained about children as young as 11 being given homework asking them to define terms such as hardcore pornography and transexual pornography.

Archbishop Sentamu Academy, a Church of England school in Hull, “apologised for any offence caused” after angry parents complained about the homework, the Daily Mail reports.

According to the report, teachers asked children between 11 and 14 years old “to ‘define' pornography, soft pornography, hardcore pornography and transsexual pornography, as well as female genital mutilation, wet dreams, trafficking, male circumcision, breast ironing and more.”

One mother told the U.K. newspaper that searching for these phrases online, in order to research the definitions, would have “destroyed” her eleven year old daughter’s mind and “scarred her for life.”

“My daughter is still very much a child, we've still got magic elves, her bedroom is done in My Little Pony. She is very innocent and naive,” she said.

“She was only in primary school last year living her best life, now she is being asked to search for hardcore pornography.”

The mother said that she had seen complaints about the homework from other parents on a Facebook group and so had prevented her daughter from looking up the terms.

“They have been told to use Google and she would have searched it. I did Google hardcore porn and some of the images that came up [were] quite disturbing,” she added.

“They're a very religious school as well, so how can they say they are a religious school but condone writing something like this in the book? I can't get my head around it. I don't get the benefit from it, apart from scaring the kids.”

Head teacher Chay Bell defended the homework, but said that he had asked “that no future PSHE materials contain any potentially sensitive content and will ensure all materials are fully age-appropriate."

Published by the National Interest on Thursday, Putin’s text revisits some of the lesser-known historical facts to address narratives increasingly popular in the West – including the claim that the Soviet Union was as much to blame as Hitler’s Germany for starting the war, or that it was somehow the Western Allies who won the war, while the overwhelming Soviet contribution is erased entirely.

Putin’s essay is more than a polemic about history, however. While he does seek to set the record straight, the Russian president also offers an important reason why he is doing so. Historical revisionism “grossly and cynically distorts the understanding of the principles” set forth in 1945 by the Allied powers, on which the current international order is based, he argues.

Now that order is under attack – not by Russia, as Western powers continuously claim, but by the West itself – through historical revisionism about the origins of WWII, erasure of memory, destruction of monuments and even celebration of Nazi collaborators.

Examples abound, from last year’s declaration by the European Union that Nazi Germany and the USSR started the war together by invading Poland – an official line in Warsaw, but a shameless falsification of actual history – to the recent statements by the White House and the Pentagon giving no credit whatsoever to the Soviet Union for victory over the Nazis or the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp.

Less than two weeks ago, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo used the anniversary of D-Day landings in Normandy to claim all the credit for the victory in WWII, retroactively redefine what the war was about, and even demonize the Chinese government through absolutely inappropriate comparisons with Nazi Germany.

Two Israeli groups set up training courses in Wikipedia editing with aims to 'show the other side' over borders and culture

Since the earliest days of the worldwide web, the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians has seen its rhetorical counterpart fought out on the talkboards and chatrooms of the internet.

Now two Israeli groups seeking to gain the upper hand in the online debate have launched a course in "Zionist editing" for Wikipedia, the online reference site.

Yesha Council, representing the Jewish settler movement, and the rightwing Israel Sheli (My I srael) movement, ran their first workshop this week in Jerusalem, teaching participants how to rewrite and revise some of the most hotly disputed pages of the online reference site.

"We don't want to change Wikipedia or turn it into a propaganda arm," says Naftali Bennett, director of the Yesha Council. "We just want to show the other side. People think that Israelis are mean, evil people who only want to hurt Arabs all day."

Wikipedia is one of the world's most popular websites, and its 16m entries are open for anyone to edit, rewrite or even erase. The problem, according to Ayelet Shaked of Israel Sheli, is that online, pro-Israeli activists are vastly outnumbered by pro-Palestinian voices. "We don't want to give this arena to the other side," she said. "But we are so few and they are so many. People in the US and Europe never hear about Israel's side, with all the correct arguments and explanations."

Like others involved with this project, Shaked thinks that her government is "not doing a very good job" of explaining Israel to the world.

And on Wikipedia, they believe that there is much work to do.

Take the page on Israel, for a start: "The map of Israel is portrayed without the Golan heights or Judea and Samaria," said Bennett, referring to the annexed Syrian territory and the West Bank area occupied by Israel in 1967.

Another point of contention is the reference to Jerusalem as the capital of Israel – a status that is constantly altered on Wikipedia.

Other pages subject to constant re-editing include one titled Goods allowed/banned for import into Gaza – which is now being considered for deletion – and a page on the Palestinian territories.
