And perhaps acts of devotion (of giving up) are a ritual that might strengthen one's connection with the divine. Jesus spoke of fasting, which is a form of "sacrifice" (giving up of pleasurable food). In contrast, satanists demand the sacrifice of another living thing (pure selfishness). While God, I think, looks kindly on a ritual of self-sacrifice which is the personal CHOICE to give something up to demonstrate one's faith and one's detachment from this world of fleshly desire.
