Says no arrests or tickets for no mask, but her order 'is enforceable'

SALEM, Ore. (AP/KTVZ) — Beginning next Wednesday, Oregonians in some of the state’s most populous counties will be required to wear face masks when they are in public indoor spaces, such as grocery stores and shops, to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

The new face covering mandate pertains to residents in Clackamas, Hood River, Lincoln, Polk, Marion, Multnomah and Washington counties.

Although the new requirement is set to go into effect in less than a week, it remains unclear what repercussions people face if they do not follow it.

Gov. Kate Brown said at a news conference Thursday people won't be ticketed or arrested for not wearing masks.

"No, it doesn't mean you have to wear one while eating at a bar or restaurant," Brown said. "And no, you won't get arrested or get a ticket for not wearing a face covering."

"However," she added, "This is a requirement, and it is enforceable."

Brown said the seven counties were chosen based on population density, the spread of coronavirus and the vulnerability of the communities.

Brown said the state will work with community groups to make free face coverings available for those who need them.

The governor said the "next few weeks will be difficult" and returned to a familiar analogy from recent months, about how the Portland area will be "stepping out onto the ice."

But she said the state is "much better prepared" for any further uptick in cases than it was when the pandemic hit in early March, with much more personal protective gear, testing and contact tracing.

However, Brown said, "If hospitalizations spike too quickly, or the capacity of the health care system is threatened, we will be forced to revert to tighter restrictions."

"It comes down to me. It comes down to you," she said. "It comes down to each and every one of us. … Stay safe, to stay open."

Fox News host Tucker Carlson reported the stepmother of the former Atlanta police officer charged with fatally shooting Rayshard Brooks last week has been fired from her job.

Carlson said a "source familiar with the matter" told his show that Melissa Rolfe, the stepmother of Garrett Rolfe, was let go from an Atlanta-based company called Equity Prime Mortgage, where she had been human resources director.

"Rolfe was promised that her job was safe, but today she was told, and we're quoting, 'We have to terminate our relationship with you.' No other explanation was offered," he said.

Carlson said, "apparently," her "only crime was being officer Rolfe's stepmother." He noted that Rolfe has been scrubbed from the company's website.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday he is “considering” imposing a quarantine on travelers coming to New York from Florida, where coronavirus cases are spiking.

“I have experts who have advised me to do that. I’m considering it now,” Cuomo said during his second-to-last daily coronavirus press briefing in Manhattan when asked by a reporter about whether he will issue a two-week quarantine on people coming to the Empire State from the Sunshine State.

Florida has recently seen a major uptick in coronavirus cases, with more than 2,600 new cases recorded on Wednesday and a record 2,763 cases the day before.

In total, the state has tallied more than 82,000 COVID-19 infections.

The Louisville, KY, co-founder and organizer for Black Lives Matter, Charlotte Helm, drafted a list of requests for white people for things she believed should change.

She writes: “White people, if you’re inheriting property you intend to sell upon acceptance, give it to a black or brown family. You’re bound to make that money in some other white privileged way.”

“If you are a developer or realty owner of multi-family housing, build a sustainable complex in a black or brown blighted neighborhood and let black and brown people live in it for free,” she adds.

Rich or poor are not absolved from guilt; those looking to downsize are considered able to fork over property, too. “White people, if you can afford to downsize, give up the home you own to a black or brown family. Preferably a family from generational poverty,” she continues

And should change up your will, just in case any of your inheritors espouse problematic views. She demands: “White people, if any of the people you intend to leave your property to are racists assholes, change the will, and will your property to a black or brown family. Preferably a family from generational poverty.”
