California county sheriff says he won't enforce Newsom's coronavirus mask order

The sheriff's office for Sacramento County announced on Friday that it will not enforce Gov. Gavin Newsom's coronavirus order, which requires residents to wear masks or facial coverings while they are out in public.

The announcement came just one day after Newsom, a Democrat, issued the statewide order mandating the use of facemasks.

In a statement posted to Facebook, the sheriff’s office said residents should be “exercising safe practices” in the face of COVID-19, including the use of masks, but it also deemed the idea of enforcement to be “inappropriate,” because it would criminalize average Americans for a relatively small infraction.

“Due to the minor nature of the offense, the potential for negative outcomes during enforcement encounters, and anticipating the various ways in which the order may be violated, it would be inappropriate for deputies to criminally enforce the Governor’s mandate,” Sheriff Scott Jones' statement read.

Fort Hood launches sexual harassment investigation in missing soldier Vanessa Guillen's disappearance

Fort Hood has initiated an internal investigation into allegations that Pfc. Vanessa Guillen, a soldier from Houston who has been missing since April 22, was sexually harassed.

Guillen was last seen April 22 in a parking lot at Fort Hood. She reportedly told her family she had been sexually harassed on base before her disappearance.

“I opened an investigation concerning the information provided by the Guillen Family that Pfc. Vanessa Guillen was harassed prior to her disappearance,” Col. Ralph Overland, Commander of the 3rd Cavalry Regiment, said in a statement. “I take allegations of sexual harassment very seriously and we are conducting a thorough investigation.”

Overland appointed an investigating team led by a senior investigating officer to conduct a commander’s investigation, known as an “AR 15-6 Investigation,” into the allegations. The investigation will collect facts and evidence before presenting the findings to Overland.
