Germany: Figures reveal most migrants have no will to integrate

Statistics from mandatory language courses offered to migrants in Germany show a dismal success rate. Representatives of the Right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party say that this demonstrates that migrants have little will to integrate into German society.

Asylum-seekers who come to Germany are required to complete a “German integration course” which includes lessons in the German language. The statistics for this year show that 45.7% of migrants who took the language test — equivalent to approximately 62,000 students — failed to reach the B1 level, which is the ability to hold a simple conversation in German, on their first attempt, according to a report by the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung.

Of those who failed and then took the course a second time, 78% of them failed the second exam.

The trend has been growing worse in recent years. This year, 77.6% of migrants failed the language test, while in 2017 only 65.7% failed.

Further, it has been revealed that last year, some teachers of the language courses passed their students despite the fact that they had failed to reach the B1 level.

The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, which is in charge of the courses, has been blamed for the poor results, and the budget for migrant language lessons has tripled in recent years — in 2018, 874 million euros were spent on the effort. This was up from only 269 million euros in 2015. But despite the higher spending, and although better supervision was promised, migrants’ performance continues to decline.

“It is unacceptable that the taxpayer-funded integration programmes run into the hundreds of millions,” René Springer, an MP from the AfD, said about the results. “The high dropout rates in recent years show that many migrants lack the necessary ‘learning culture’ or the will to integrate. The aim must be for immigration to proceed in such a way that it offers recognisable added value to our society.”

Statistics published last year revealed that 40% of people on welfare in Germany are migrants, and German taxpayers pay more than 4 billion euros every month to support migrants, as previously reported by Voice of Europe.

Texas' 'Privately Funded' Bullet Train Project Seeks Taxpayer Dollars

KTRH radio reports on what is literally the most expected development in the project to build a bullet train connecting Dallas and Houston. It has been pitched as funded wholly by private dollars. Yeah…about that.

Texas Central, the company behind the project, has touted the fact that it will be fully privately funded and not reliant on tax dollars. But rising costs and the coronavirus pandemic may have changed that. Faced with struggling equity markets due to the financial downturn in recent months, Texas Central was forced to lay off 28 employees and is now seeking government loans and stimulus money.

In a letter to the Texas State Senate obtained by the Dallas Business Journal, Texas Central Chairman Drayton McLane Jr. notes the project has “hit a snag with all the difficulties of the coronavirus,” and talks of “monies we hope to receive from President Trump’s infrastructure stimulus through the Department of Transportation.”

Coronavirus as an excuse to seek federal dollars is novel (see what I did there?). Coronavirus as a reason not to ride mass transit at all is another, and it makes a lot more sense. The CDC recommends riding alone when you can, avoiding peak hours when you can, and practicing social distancing. Rail seldom allows for any of that — unless you observe the Austin Metro even before the plague struck. Seeing those trains with riders aboard is a photo-op on par with spotting UFOs piloted by Carmen Sandiego with Waldo in the co-pilot slot. Everyone in the area talks about riding the metro. No one actually does. Texas is big and we tend to need our cars and trucks.

The Texas Central plan started out with a price tag of $10 billion. No one believed that. It was supposed to be privately funded. No one believed that either. It’s now standing on a $30 billion cost according to state Rep. Ben Lehman (R – Magnolia), and it’s begging for a taxpayer bailout. It also connects two major cities by slicing through several rural areas with only one stop in between, which has caused yet another divide.

Most in the rural areas would not even be able to get on the train without at least a half hour on the road first. The bullet train would be ridden primarily by well-to-do types from the cities who would be riding it to keep from having to bother themselves with stops in those rural areas. So…the rural areas lose out on the economic impact from the pit stops they get now, plus the rail line cuts through their property, it’s going to make noise many of them left the cities to avoid, and now the system’s proponents want them to pay for it.

Insert laughing out loud emoji here.

And I say all of this having experienced and enjoyed Japan’s shinkansen bullet train. It’s sleek and cool. But this is Texas. If we wanted to ride trains, we’d live in New York.

Great-grandson of 'Aunt Jemima' is outraged over decision to 'erase' family legacy

Quaker Oats announced an immediate rebraning of the Aunt Jemima line this week

Quaker Oats announced Wednesday the immediate rebranding of its Aunt Jemima breakfast line, claiming the company name and logo perpetuate "racial stereotypes." The move came in response to a renewed national discussion about the far-reaching impacts of racism.

"Aunt Jemima's origins are based on a racial stereotype," the company said.

Now, the great-grandson of "Aunt Jemima" is speaking out, criticizing the move.

Larnell Evans Sr. told Patch that the attempt by Quaker Oats to rewrite history is a great "injustice."

"This is an injustice for me and my family. This is part of my history, sir," Evans said. "The racism they talk about, using images from slavery, that comes from the other side — white people."

"This company profits off images of our slavery. And their answer is to erase my great-grandmother's history. A black female," he added. "It hurts."

According to Patch, Evans' great-grandmother — the late Anna Short Harrington — succeeded Nancy Green, a former enslaved woman, as the face of the Aunt Jemima brand in the early 1920s.

From Patch:

Harrington was born on a South Carolina plantation where her family worked as sharecroppers. In 1927, a white family from New York "bought" Harrington to be their maid. She made a living as cook at the Kappa Sigma fraternity house in Syracuse and worked for wealthy white people, including Gov. Thomas E. Dewey. She was discovered by a Quaker Oats representative while serving up her pancakes, a favorite of local frat boys, at the New York State Fair in 1935.

Quaker Oats used Harrington's likeness on products and advertising, and it sent her around the country to serve flapjacks dressed as "Aunt Jemima." The gig made her a national celebrity.

"She worked for that Quaker Oats for 20 years. She traveled all the way around the United States and Canada making pancakes as Aunt Jemima for them," Evans explained.

"This woman served all those people, and it was after slavery. She worked as Aunt Jemima. That was her job," he continued. "How do you think I feel as a black man sitting here telling you about my family history they're trying to erase?"

‘They hate America’: BLM protesters earn scorn for tearing down President Grant & national anthem lyricist statues

The latest statues to be toppled by BLM protesters are that of Ulysses S. Grant, who led Northern Union soldiers in the Civil War, and Francis Scott Key, the lyricist behind ‘The Star Spangled Banner,’ puzzling and outraging many.

Hundreds showed up to tear down the statues in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park on Juneteenth, a celebration of the end of slavery in the US.

The statues were also vandalized with spray paint with phrases like “slave owner” written on them.

While targeting statues has become a common occurrence at Black Lives Matter protests around the nation, many on social media questioned the logic in targeting past president Grant, who led the Union Army during the Civil War and helped bring an end to slavery, and Key, the man behind the country’s national anthem.

Many pushed back against people calling Grant a slave owner, pointing out that the general freed his only slave before the war and was instrumental in bringing an end to slavery in the US.

“He was a ‘slave owner’ in that he was gifted a slave, hated the idea, and freed him within a year. Then won the Civil War, prosecuted the KKK, and appointed African Americans to prominent roles in government,”tweeted Matt Whitlock.

“Pres. Grant was literally the opposite of a confederate rebel. This shows these mobs tearing down statues have zero to do with the cause of racial equality,” Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) added.

“This is just dumb now,” another user tweeted in reaction to the news.

TV: Trump, top aides to decide this week whether to back Netanyahu’s annexation

‘Decisive’ White House meeting, to be attended by Pompeo, Kushner, Friedman, said set to determine whether US okays PM’s July 1 plan for sovereignty over settlements, Jordan Valley

The White House will this week hold a “decisive” meeting on whether to approve Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s declared plan to start from July 1 annexing the 132 West Bank settlements and the Jordan Valley — the 30 percent of the territory allocated to Israel under the Trump administration’s Israeli-Palestinian peace plan, Israel’s Channel 13 reported Saturday night.

Citing unnamed American and Israeli sources, the report said US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman is to fly home on Sunday for the pivotal meeting, which is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, and which is also to be attended by Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law; Secretary of State Mike Pompeo; and National Security Adviser Richard O’Brien. Friedman may meet with Netanyahu and Alternate Prime Minister Benny Gantz before he leaves.

Trump himself is “likely” to join the session, the report said, since “he’s the one who will ultimately decide” on whether to approve Israeli annexation, and if so on what scale.

Scandals involving Democrats in two races could damage party’s chances of taking the Senate==

Two Democratic Senate candidates, Chris Janicek in Nebraska and former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, are engulfed in controversy.

Scandals weakening two Democratic Senate candidates have dimmed the party’s hopes of regaining control of the Senate in the November elections.

Chris Janicek, the Democratic nominee running against Nebraska Republican Sen. Ben Sasse, is involved in a text message scandal that has resulted in calls from state Democrats for him to withdraw from the race.

"Do you think the campaign should spend some money on getting her laid?" Janicek reportedly wrote in a group text, which referred to one of his campaign staffers. “It will probably take three guys.”

A story from the New York Times quotes part of the woman’s response to Janicek’s comments. To date, she has chosen to remain anonymous.

“As a woman who stands up and beside other women, I can’t just pretend this didn’t happen,” she said. “I cannot support your campaign after what you said. I have integrity, morals and values but, most of all I have self respect for myself and fellow women.”

The Nebraska Democratic Party announced that it has withdrawn its support for Janicek’s campaign.

“Our party will not extend resources or any type of support to any candidate that violates our code of conduct and doesn’t treat men and women with the dignity and respect they deserve,” said Jane Kleeb, the party’s chair, in a statement.

Former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper is also caught up in a scandal leading up to the June 30 primary to decide who will face Colorado Republican Sen. Cory Gardner.

Republicans now have a 53-45 Senate majority, with the two other senators Independents who caucus with the Democrats.

The Democratic Party would have to gain at least three seats in November to take control of the upper chamber. So every potential win is critical, particularly Colorado, where Democrats had targeted a vulnerable Gardner for defeat.

Democrats will have a more difficult time stopping Sasse from winning a second term. Despite him occasionally being critical of President Trump, the president has already endorsed Sasse — a bona fide conservative whose race the Cook Political Report rates "Solid Republican."

According to the Colorado Ethics Commission, Hickenlooper accepted free travel while he served as governor, which violated the state’s ethics laws. He testified before the commission after the free travel was discovered. Prior to that, he did not comply with a subpoena.

The commission ultimately found him guilty of two violations.
