U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito

Craig Carpenito is the U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey. As U.S. Attorney, he is responsible for overseeing all federal criminal prosecutions and the litigation of all civil matters in New Jersey in which the federal government has an interest. Between the offices in Newark, Camden, and Trenton, Mr. Carpenito supervises a staff of approximately 170 federal prosecutors, and approximately 130 support personnel.

 

Prior to being sworn in as U.S. Attorney on Jan. 4, 2018, Mr. Carpenito was previously a partner at Alston & Bird LLP, where he was a co-chair of the firm’s Litigation and Trial Practice Group and its Government and Internal Investigations Team. He served in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey from 2003 to 2008.

Between August 2000 and September 2005, Mr. Carpenito was Senior Counsel in the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Division of Enforcement, New York Regional Office. He received his B.A. from Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, and his J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law in Newark.

Career

 

After graduation from law school, Carpenito joined the New York Regional Office of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's Division of Enforcement. In 2003, he joined the office of the United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey under then U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie, where he was responsible for investigating and prosecuting securities and health care fraud, drug trafficking and firearm offenses, as well as other federal crimes.

 

While serving as an Assistant United States Attorney, he successfully prosecuted the Chairman of Cendant Corporation Walter Forbes for his role in the largest case of accounting fraud in the country's history at the time.[4] On January 17, 2007, Forbes was sentenced to over 12 years in prison, and ordered to make restitution amounting to $3.28 billion.[5] Prior to the conviction of Bernard Madoff, the Forbes restitution order was the largest restitution order ever imposed.[6]

 

Prior to becoming the U.S. Attorney, he was a partner with the law firm Alston & Bird, where he was a co-chair of the firm’s Litigation and Trial Practice Group and its Government and Internal Investigations Team.[7] In April 2012, he was one of five attorneys nationwide to be named a Rising Star by Law360 as one of the top white collar defense attorneys under the age of 40 in the industry.[8] While in private practice, Carpenito represented former Governor Chris Christie in a state court proceeding relating to the Fort Lee lane closure scandal.

Carpenito has been a resident of Monroe Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey

U.S. Attorney Carpenito Restructures Office To Add Additional Resources To Quality Of Life Issues Facing New Jersey Citizens

 

NEWARK, N.J. – U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito announced today that he is reorganizing the District of New Jersey office to add additional resources to areas that are vital to the health and safety of the people of New Jersey.

U.S. Attorney Carpenito said this new structure will take best advantage of the depth and breadth of experience of the 130 Assistant U.S. Attorneys that staff the Newark, Trenton and Camden offices and focus their work on areas of criminal and civil enforcement that will pay the biggest dividends in protecting the public.

 

“After spending the past six weeks conducting an in-depth review of our operations, meeting with federal and state law enforcement leaders from across the state, and working closely with the Department of Justice, I have identified several areas of criminal activity where we need to intensify our efforts,” U.S. Attorney Carpenito said. “This sharpened focus will help us get the most dangerous criminals off our streets, address the ongoing opioid epidemic in our state, and stop the hackers and identity thieves who prey on our residents.”

U.S. Attorney Carpenito announced the following strategic changes in how the office will be organized:

 

• Three new units in the Criminal Division:

o Opioid Abuse Prevention and Enforcement –

o Violent Crimes Enforcement Unit

o Cyber Crime Prevention and Enforcement
