He said, 'because elections have consequences,' and they sure do.

The President can hire of fire for any reason, or no reason at all. It happens with Democratic administrations, it happens with Republican administrations, the President has the right to do it, and he did it. They can argue all the want of the intentions were of the President, but that's purely hearsay and speculation.
