Correction: Some planets had symbiotic species which needed each other to live their lives to the fullest. Other planets had more than one species which sometimes clashed, but the happy ending was when the different species realized they needed each other's talents to survive whatever challenge the planet was facing.

Agree with your main point, restated as: human nature is to prefer similars over differences.

However consider the eternal struggle for men and women to live together in harmony. The differences cause both attraction and misunderstandings/repulsion. So long as humanity can evolve to the level that each individual tries to control only his/her own self and not others, then living in a society of mixed values and cultures is possible.

IMO the real problem comes in when governments institute rigid rules penalizing differences and repressing the discussion of misunderstandings so that solutions can be found.
