MODOC COUNTY, Calif. - Modoc County Sheriff Tex Dowdy said because his county has zero reported cases of coronavirus, his office will not be enforcing face coverings. This follows the state order requiring people to wear masks in high-risk settings.

"The Modoc County Sheriff's Office recommends that everyone keep using the preventative measures that have been recommended throughout this pandemic," Sheriff Dowdy shared in a statement on Facebook. "Washing your hands, practice social distancing and staying home if you are sick."

Sheriff Dowdy encouraged those who want to wear a mask, to continue doing so.

As far as enforcement, the sheriff said his office will not be enforcing the order.

"It is my opinion that the potential for negative outcomes of enforcing such a minor offense far outweighs the risks of spreading this virus," said Dowdy. "It would not be appropriate for my deputies to criminally enforce the Governor's mandate and we will NOT do so."

The sheriff said he and his office have worked hard to build positive relationships with those living in Modoc County and they want to build upon that trust and transparency.

He added his office will continue to support the county's health officials and "operate in an educational capacity" alongside the county's health department.

The Sutter County Sherriff's Office also announced it will not be enforcing the order.

Wonder if the kneeling Butte Country Sheriff (home of the Camp Fire and Dam flooding) will do the right thing?
