Demand for US dollar as world’s reserve currency ‘seems to be waning’ – Deutsche Bank

The currency markets are currently facing “multiple cross-currents” on rising global concerns over a potential second wave of Covid-19, said Deutsche Bank’s chief Asia macro strategist Sameer Goel.

According to him, the “big question” for investors right now is whether the US dollar should be trading at a safe-haven risk premium.

Goel told CNBC that since March investors have been favoring the greenback over its peers in the Group of 10 countries, in part due to “emergency dollar demand” as the world went into a synchronized shutdown to stop the spread of the pandemic. As investors typically flock to the US dollar in times of uncertainty, in part due to its position as the world’s reserve currency, “that emergency dollar demand seems to be waning.”

Furthermore, “the exit strategy for the US, if anything, looks poorer than it is for the rest of the world,” Goel said referring to the lifting of lockdown measures and the reopening of the economy. “Our mobility tracker suggests that, [the] bulk of Europe, for example, is opening up faster than [the] US is.”

All eyes on Roberts ahead of Supreme Court's abortion ruling

Chief Justice John Roberts is under the microscope as the Supreme Court prepares to issue its first major ruling on abortion rights in the Trump era, which will give the clearest indication yet of the court's willingness to revisit protections that were first granted in Roe v. Wade.

The tie-breaking vote may rest with Roberts, and the case stands to test his role as the court's new ideological center as well as his allegiance to past rulings.

A decision could come as early as Monday, following a blockbuster week at the court. Roberts joined narrow majorities last week to extend civil rights protections to gay and transgender people and block the Trump administration's plan to end a deportation shield for young undocumented immigrants under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy.

But the abortion rights case differs from the others in a key respect. Whereas the LGBT and DACA disputes asked the justices to interpret the meaning of federal law, the Louisiana case asks the justices to weigh their own past rulings on abortion.

Roberts's image as an "institutionalist" justice dedicated to honoring prior Supreme Court opinions, especially recent ones, is now on the line.

On July 1, Russians will vote on the most sweeping changes to the nation’s constitution since it was adopted almost 30 years ago. One of the amendments would allow Putin, 67, to reset his term limit to zero even though he’s already served four, and to helm the country for two more six-year terms when his current one expires in 2024. In power since 2000, Putin is already the longest-serving Kremlin leader since Josef Stalin.

Putting aside concerns about individual rights and political unpopularity, U.S. governors and mayors said they were turning to compulsory face coverings to stop the virus running out of control as economies reopened.

On a day when Florida posted 3,207 new cases, its second daily record in a week, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings ordered obligatory mask use, telling residents of Orlando and other cities it would help them avoid a second shutdown.

California Governor Gavin Newsom ordered mask use in most places as the state for the second day in a row registered over 4,000 new cases.

As Arizona posted another daily case record, the Democratic mayors of Tucson and Phoenix respectively ordered and prepared to vote on mandatory face coverings after Republican Governor Doug Ducey bowed to pressure and let cities set mask rules.

Dozens treated for CHLORINE exposure as massive fire engulfs hazmat storage at US Okinawa base in Japan

A fire broke out inside a chemical compound at a major US Air Force base on the Japanese island of Okinawa, triggering the release of chlorine and affecting multiple people who were treated for exposure to toxic gas particles.

Fire alarms were activated on Monday at a building where hazardous materials are stockpiled, Japanese and US media reported. Located in the central part of Kadena Air Base, the facility burned for a few more hours, though the firefighters didn’t let it spill over the base perimeter.

The base, said to be America’s largest military installation in the region, confirmed on Facebook that the blaze “released chlorine gas particles” into the air. Footage that surfaced online shows thick plumes of black smoke rising from the hazmat facility.

US tests new bomb that will change ‘the rules of the game’

BEIRUT, LEBANON (1:45 P.M.) – The United States tested the new smart bomb, GBU-53 StormBreaker, using one of their modern warplanes.

According to reports, the U.S. Navy’s FA-18E/F Super Hornet fighter and attack aircraft launched the GBU-53 StormBreaker all-weather bomb on a designated target.

The new bomb can be used in all weather conditions, including poor visibility, Janes Defense reported last week.

An RMD spokesperson told Janes that the U.S. Air Force determines the number of tests needed to validate the bomb, but did not specify when it would be available.

“The USAF (US Air Force) program office, in co-ordination with the USN, determine the appropriate number of tests to validate different parameters. These will be a combination of development and operational test shots of which several will be live firings.”

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the missile will change “the rules of the game.”

When aiming at a target, the bomb uses a semi-active laser and GPS. The StormBreaker has a range of more than 45 miles (72 km).

The small dimensions indicate that many of these bombs will be placed on a single American fighter, including their F-15E jets, which can carry up to 28 of these missiles.
