Exclusive — Seema Verma: Cuomo, Other Democrat Governors’ Coronavirus Nursing Home Policies Contradicted Federal Guidance

Hmm Q perfect timing

Seema Verma, the administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), told Breitbart News exclusively that New York’s Democrat Gov. Andrew Cuomo and other Democrat governors originally issued guidance that contradicted federal guidelines for nursing homes battling the coronavirus pandemic.

“I just want to make it very clear that our guidance was absolutely crystal clear,” Verma said in an exclusive interview late last week. “It was clear and unmistakable. Any insinuation to the contrary is woefully mistaken at best and dishonest at worst. We put out our guidance on March 13. It’s very clear when it says that, I’m actually going to read this to you, it says that: ‘When should a nursing home accept a resident who is diagnosed with COVID-19?’ It says: ‘A nursing home can accept a resident diagnosed with COVID-19 and still under transmission-based precautions,’ which means if this person is infectious you have to take precautions. It says ‘as long as the facility can follow CDC guidance for transmission-based precautions.’ It says: ‘If a nursing home cannot, it must wait until these precautions are discontinued,’ meaning if you are not able to care for this patient—somebody is still positive and you’re not equipped to care for the patient, then you shouldn’t accept the patient into your care. That’s really important because longstanding discharge—when you’re discharging a patient from the hospital, longstanding guidelines require when you transfer them somewhere you transfer them to a place that can take care of their needs whether they’re going home or they’re going to a nursing home or some other facility.”

Verma added later that it is “disingenuous” for Democrats such as Cuomo to claim they were following federal guidelines when they were not.

“I think the most important thing though is I think it’s disingenuous to try to undermine the federal guidelines,” Verma said. “They were absolutely clear and nursing homes across the country adhered to those and that’s why we’ve seen at the vast majority of nursing homes. I just don’t think we should ever put a nursing home in a situation or a patient where we force them to take a patient they are not prepared to care for. That not only jeopardizes the patient but it jeopardizes the health and safety of every single resident in that nursing home.”

The guidelines they put out, or the policy they put out, is in sharp contrast to exactly what we were saying,” Verma told Breitbart News. “Many of the nursing homes—we’re seeing this in the data—many of the nursing homes were ill-equipped to address some of the requirements around infectious disease control. They were struggling in terms of isolating patients. If you have a nursing home that has several floors, maybe you can isolate patients easily. Maybe they develop a COVID-positive wing. Those were some of the things we were recommending to ensure isolation. But some facilities, they’re smaller and maybe they’ve got two people sharing a room who are sharing a bathroom with two other people. Obviously, isolation in those types of situations is going to be way more difficult. That’s why you’ve got to ensure that the patients’ needs can be taken care of. In New York, what they put out is in direct conflict with the federal guidelines.”

ProPublica’s reporters noted that the consequences of Cuomo’s order forcing nursing homes to take patients with COVID-19 were particularly brutal. “In the weeks that followed the March 25 order, COVID-19 tore through New York state’s nursing facilities, killing more than 6,000 people — about 6% of its more than 100,000 nursing home residents. In all, as many as 4,500 COVID-19 infected patients were sent to nursing homes across the state, according to a count conducted by The Associated Press,” they wrote. At this particular facility profiled by ProPublica—the 120-bed Diamond Hill nursing home in Troy—by June, 18 residents had died from the virus. Fifty-eight had been infected—and at least 50 of 100 staffers there had also been infected. States that followed Cuomo’s lead were similarly ravaged; states that followed the federal guidance, such as Florida, were not. California, which started down the Cuomo path but reversed course early on, fared much better than New York.

I was talking to a friend with his Mom in a nursing home, she wrote him saying that no one in the homes has been touched by staff for months and months. The people are so alone and lonely, their dying from no contact. Time to open up nursing homes to family and friends and allow the staff to interact with them. This is sinister what they are doing to the elder generation. They had a drive by Mother’s Day only from the street. This has to stop now

Joni Ernst Proposes to Disclose Lawmakers’ PPP Loans, Potential Conflicts of Interest

Oh yessss do it Patriot Ernst

Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) introduced legislation Monday that would disclose lawmakers’ Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans, which she said could reveal lawmakers’ potential conflicts of interest.

Ernst unveiled her legislation after a Politico report found at least four lawmakers — Reps. Roger Williams (R-TX), Vicky Hartzler (R-MO), Susie Lee (D-NV), and Debbie Murcasel Powell (D-FL) — either received a PPP or had a spouse who had received a PPP loan. The PPP program is typically reserved for small businesses to help alleviate the effects of the coronavirus outbreak.

The legislation, otherwise known as the Transparency Requirements Aimed at Congressional Expenditures (TRACE) Act, would mandate that lawmakers, spouses of lawmakers, and congressional employees disclose within 15 days that they have received a PPP loan.

Ernst said in a statement on Monday the American people deserve to know if lawmakers have a potential conflict of interest over the PPP program. She said:

It’s really simple: if you’re a member of Congress and you or a family member benefited from the Paycheck Protection Program, Americans – your constituents – should know. This bill provides greater transparency, which ensures accountability. The PPP has saved countless businesses and the jobs of millions of Americans, but those in Congress who are voting on it—or any issue—where a potential conflict of interest may exist need to be upfront about it. The only reason to oppose this bill is if you have something to hide.

Conservatives and ethics watchdogs lauded Ernst’s bill.

Andrew Lautz, the policy and government affairs manager of the National Taxpayers Union (NTU), said:

Congress has authorized more than $650 billion for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) since March. While PPP has certainly helped many small businesses around the country, taxpayers supporting this program have a right to know where such an extraordinary amount of money is going – especially if the Members of Congress who voted for the program are benefiting from it. The TRACE Act would ensure that the people who represent Americans in Congress, and the people seeking to represent Americans in Congress next year, are required to disclose any benefits from PPP. National Taxpayers Union applauds Senator Ernst for introducing this good-government measure, and we urge Congress to pass it as standalone legislation or as part of the next major COVID-19 legislative package.”

Adam Andrzejewski, the CEO and founder of transparency nonprofit OpentheBooks, said, “Taxpayers must be able to follow the money. If members of Congress vote for subsidies or other aid that they benefit from in their private capacity, then every dime must be disclosed in as real-time as possible.”

“This helps preserve the institutional integrity of Congress,” Andrzejewski added.

$2.7 Million in Meth Seized at Texas Border Crossing

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in the Texas Rio Grande Valley seized more than 137 pounds of methamphetamine at the Brownsville/Matamoros International Bridge last week. Officials valued the seizure at more than $2.7 million.

Rio Grande Valley Sector CBP officers assigned to the Brownsville/Matamoros International Bridge on June 17 observed a tan 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe approaching from Mexico for inspection. Officers identified the driver as a 72-year-old Mexican man. The officers referred the driver to a secondary inspection station, according to information obtained from CBP officials.

In the secondary inspection area, officers scanned the truck with a non-intrusive imaging system. A K-9 also conducted a preliminary walk around. The K-9 alerted to the possible presence of drugs and the imaging system detected anomalies in the cargo being transported.

A physical search of the truck led to the discovery of numerous packages believed to contain methamphetamine.

Officials seized the 137.57 pounds of methamphetamine estimated to be worth approximately $2,751,341. The also seized the pickup truck and arrested the Mexican man. All were turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigation for further investigation and referral of drug smuggling charges.

“Our CBP officers remain committed in securing our borders and keeping these dangerous narcotics off our streets,” said Port Director Tater Ortiz, Brownsville Port of Entry. “Our officers’ continued hard work and dedication to our border security mission led to this significant seizure.”

The following day, Rio Grande Valley Sector Border Patrol agents seized another $1 million in drugs in a series of busts. The seized drugs included 965 pounds of marijuana and 577 Xanax pills.
