Newsom agrees to downsize his California budget cuts in a deal with lawmakers
Gov. Gavin Newsom has agreed to mostly abandon far-reaching spending reductions he said were necessary for California without new federal coronavirus relief funds. A budget compromise with leaders of the state Legislature relies on a more optimistic economic outlook as the basis for fewer cuts and protection of public school funding.
Formal approval of the full deal with the governor isn't expected until later this week.
