Just for the possession anon. With Australia they stuffed it with prisoners, with NZ they sold affordable one way packages (a bit later on than Australian settlement).
There was a French colony in NZ too, I'm not sure what deals were done, or wars were won, to make it 100% British Empire though.
Also don't forget Britain had just lost a rather large and profitable colony in North America at the time of settling Australia.
